Just got back from a long weekend in San Diego, hanging with some buddies. One major thing on the agenda was a jam at one buddy's house - with my buddy's son (a great drummer), the guitarist from the son's band, and another guitarist - a 60 year old colorful character named Richard who's a phenomenal blues player.

I was told I'd be lined up with a bass - not to worry. When I got there, I was pleasantly surprised to find a gorgeous Cherry Burst SR5H waiting for me, compliments of the younger guitar player's dad (who wasn't there). Like a glove. Needless to say, had a blast. We played for 3 or 4 hours - alot of 12 bar blues and some other stuff - covers as well as some original things some of us threw out there. We did Folsom Prison Blues, and I had to admit that the only reason I could fake my way through it (besides the fact that it's a basic 1/4/5 tune) was that I'd seen Walk the Line in the past few years and loved all that old Cash stuff.

Anyway, good times, and it couldn't have worked out better, bass-wise, though of course it wouldn't have hurt my feelings if it'd been a Bongo sitting there when I showed up.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I am one of those guys like your friend who didn't jump in. I have always shied away from most jam sessions. I tend to only want to play after I have practiced some songs on my own a bit. Any suggestions from you knuckleheads on how to prepare for a jam session? I am a decent player technique wise, and when playing a gig, I am always very tight with the songs. I learn songs very well, but have never felt good about "just jumping in there."
