so after a couple days of not having a gig i finally take my sting ray 5 out of the case and i start playing and something is different.

whenever i fret the low B at the 6th fret it gives me a loud clank that i had yet to hear on my musicman.

i plugged it in and it sounds real thumpy...like imagine a palm muted p bass or something (reminds me of the intro of that jet song "are you gonna be my girl")it sounds cool but not how my sting ray should sound.

what could be the problem? im guessing the tension? maybe i should try adjusting the string height a little on the bridge? why all the sudden?

From your description it sounds like the B string went bad. Broken wraps or something. If you have another B, put it on and see what that sounds like. I doubt it's the pickup or string height unless you've got the string very low and/or the pickup way too close to the string. If it only happens at the 6th fret and it's good everywhere else then you probably have a high 7th fret and need to raise the saddle to compensate. Let us know how you do.

I'd say replace the strings. I have had a string go bad on a few occasions where it sounded bad on certain frets but okay on others. Just happened on my acoustic bass a few months ago, the open E string and the first and second fret had a bad metallic buzz but the rest of the frets sounded fine, replaced the strings and all was happy in AEB land again. As PluckyThump said, probably broken wraps or something like that.

Something as simple as bumping the string side of the neck on a door frame, mic stand or such can sometime ruin a string. I've had it happen.

If it's doing it at that spot only,it sounds like the neck moved a bit. Add a bit of relief to the neck.
