SR5 Opinions

Unbiased Oppions only, I played a SR5.... OLP.. today its the only one I could find they didn't have any ernieballs in. Anyway I liked how it sounded but it was a little too dull, im guessing its because it was passive. Anyway I never really cared for 5 strings but I dunno there is just something about the looks of a SR5. What do you guys honestly thinking about SR5s compared to other 5 strings and what do you guys think about 5 strings in general? I know most people say they don't even play below the 5th fret on the B string but if I WOULD play below it but not above it. I feel like I loose all tone the more you play up a neck.

After trying just about every bass Ive wanted to get my hands on, I feel the same way.

The StingRay 5 is IT for me.

I love my SR5. I had not played 5 string basses for the past several years but felt I needed to take the plunge again as I've been playing in a local cover band and a lot of the songs call for the lower strings. I found that I prefer the tone of the earlier Alnico equipped SR5 basses but the post '92 basses sound wonderful. I use Ernie Ball strings as well and it is a perfect combo. I got this shirt in the mail today so I thought I'd share it along with a pic of my SR5. I think they are the best 5 string for the money. Now all I have to do is find me an early Blueburst SR5 with maple board and I'll be set!

Uhh. I have an SR5 and love it, but I recently stumbled on a early 90s F*n*e* Jazz 5 with the factory Philip Kubicki 18volt system and it gives it a real run for the money sound wise. If you like Kubicki tone. The neck on the *e*d*r feels pretty lousy in comparison, though.

I have an SR5 I love. Don't play it cuz the Bongo 5 H gets the play time.

I loved my SR 5 so much I promised to beat the hell out of the first person that put a scratch on it even it was me.

The SR5 has the best neck that was ever put on a 5 stringer IMHO.
If I ever get famous I am going to see if BP will build me a Bongo 5 H with an SR5 neck on it.


The SR 5 is the bass I own that is going to be handed down through the generations of my family.

I would gig it again but I am getting old and might scratch it.

You play a 5 string for a while, a 4 string feels tiny. At least to me. I play 5 string exclusively and own 3 and the MM Stingray is my main bass. I'll try to post some clips of my last gig on youtube. The sound just cuts through.
Me personally, I like the 1 pickup 5 string. The parallel setting is great for slap, the single coil (which is my favorite setting) sounds like a Jazz bass with Bartolini's and the Series setting sounds like the single coil but on steroids. Very distinctive. The Stingray sound. :
Their quality control is excellent. I love the new nut 'cause it intonates great.

BTW, save some cash and get the Ernie Ball. You'll like it much better than the OLP.

I love the neck on the SR5(and the tone).The Bongo 5 is very good also but my little hands like the smaller neck of the SR5.The Bongo 5 seemed a little wider to me .....(to all the techies)is it really wider or am I crazy?

SR5 is godly. only downside is weaklings tend to find it a little heavy, and to them I say HIT THE GYM!

Alright, I'll try to be unbiased. I have found one five string out there to be superior to the SR5, and that bass is the Peavey Cirrus. Give one a try. Strangely though, I'd take a StingRay four string over a Peavey Cirrus four string any day.

Ok, SR5's... owned one and what a great bass it was. Sadly, soon found out I'm a 4 string only kinda guy and moved it on. However, great bass and lovely feel etc etc.
My worry on this thread is starting a comparison or asking judgement after trialing an OLP??? Yeah, I know, Ernie Ball licensed and all that but OLP are made in China and have bought the right to use the afilliation only. Before you all shoot me down I know EB don't lend their name to any old piece of crap but if you could get the same standard of Guitar for MANY hundreds of dollars/pounds less then EB would seriously have to rethink their licensing protocols.

Bide your time and try a REAL EB SR5.... you will notice a CONSIDERABLE difference!!!!!

I've played a ton of 5strings. I never liked the feel of a fiver before I played a SR5. They have the best neck and b string of any bass i've played.

It was the guitar center in Baton Rouge they didn't have any EB SR5'S but I know the One in new orleans does so Ill go there soon.

I have played many 5's through my time and I now own 3 EB 5 strings. That should tell you something. I do own two other 5's, but they are in catagories that EB does not currently have. One is a hollow body.

My biggest gripe with other 5's on the market is a loose B string that flops rather than retaining tone as the note decays. Stingrays have never done that. I was even more impressed that they manage this with a 34" scale neck rather than a 35.

Bottom line, best 5 out there for the money in my opinion.

By the way, I go below the 5th fret on the B string quite often, depends on the music you play really.
