Do you use flats on your SR5's and your Bongos both?

backagain1

Of course!

But keep in mind that the (a) the ideal reference tone I carry around in my head is probably not the same one you have and (b) I'm not exactly what you'd call a "modern" bassist.

Maybe some day I'll try some flats on my SR5. It might not be too soon, because I just can't get over how good it sounds with Slinkys. Based on the compliments on the sound I've been receiving, others agree.

Best wishes,

i tried several flats on my stingrays and ended up with some chromes on my sr4 with 2band (which i sold for a ric*******er 4oo1v63) and some TI's on my 30th anniversary.

i really like the sound. the slap sound is fine for me.
here is a soundsample of the 30th with some TI on it: <file deletet - on request reupload>

How often do you change your flats? How long do they last?

Thanks,

backagain1

I wasn't kidding about the longevity comment. I've never changed a set of flats due to them "wearing out" or "losing their tone". Some people keep them on for 20 years.

Beats the heck out of buying new roundwounds every month or boiling strings to extend their life.

OK, you've convinced me. Are you using nickel strings? I don't want to wear out the frets with stainless.

I should have mentioned the other reasons for using flats -

No string noise
Negligible fret wear
Easy on the fingers

Because of the flatwound construction, there is nothing creating friction against your frets or fingers. Fret wear is not an issue at all.

I have D'Addario Chromes on my Sterling and my new SUB 5 and love them!:D

I just tried putting Chromes on my 30th ann SR and the G string wouldn't sit all the way down in the nut slot. Since it was the first string I was changing, I decided I wasn't going to mess with the nut and took it off.

Now the TI flats are on and I'll have to make a little neck adjustment. But it should sound good.

Sorry to hear that.

Let me know how the TI's work out.

So far the TI's are sounding good. They're still stretching a bit so once they settle in, it should be all good. :)

Which gauge Chromes were they?

Medium guage. I usually find Chromes to be too stiff anyway (I haven't tried the light guage). TI flats on the other hand can be too floppy on some basses and fine on others. So far, they seem fine on the 30th.

i had the same experience, try to "clamp" the end of the sting with the wrapping of the string around the tuner (i hope you know what i mean)

but i replaced the chromes with the TIs - i prefer them.

I really hear a lot about these TI's. What brand? I just bought the EB ones and they are great. Did I miss out on something?
