Surprised no-one's mentioned using the neck p'up.

I'll bet some of BP's old fender amps could manage it handily.

Like Green alluded to, if I picked up SRV's #1 ax, ran it through his favorite pedals and amp, I'd still sound like me, not like SRV. And, meaning no disrespect to the man, but the fuel he was runnin' on was a significant component in the mix, as well.

I think a good starting point, to get an SRV vibe going, tone wise, is a healthy 50 watt 6L6 driven amp.

This was probably the first tone I was after, Stevie's fingers and feel give him the edge everyone wants, but for a wailing grind like he gets a good fender tube will do I play through a deville 4/10 with my strat and when I hit my Maxon od-9(set low for overdrive not distortion) I can get it pretty perfect, I will always recommend MAXON over ibanez because the guys building maxon where the guys who did all those original ibanezes in the 80's and the maxons are even better

EMMA Electronics makes a great pedal called a RF-1 ReezaFRATzitz that gets great tone. I use it with my Gibson GA15-rv and a Axis Sport with MM90's in it and I get a tone that is real close.

Okay, thanks for all the feedback guys. I will definetly have to try some of those pedals out.

I crank the JSX head up on the clean channel, and it wont break. If I lower the gain on the Crunch channel I can get a good bluesy tone, but i find it still has a weeeeee-bit to much gain.
I think a Tube screamer might be the way to go. Has anyone tried the BB preamp pedal???

Don't forget that SRV tuned his guitar a half-step down. That makes up somewhat for the super-heavy strings.

He used 13s.

Partially true, he used them only for a while until he sobered up. Then he switched to 11s. He said the 13s were causing his hands damage and he never realized it previously due to his, shall we say, altered state of being? :D

You can approximate SRVs tone with all of the right gear, but that guy played with so much mojo, I don't think his tone can ever be nailed completely by anybody.

I'll be revisiting his catalog this August, just like every year since August 27, 1990. :(

Yeah I agree with you 100% I just wanted to know if there was a pedal to lead me in the 'general' direction of Stevies tone.

I plan on being at that 13th Annual SRV Remembrance Ride & Concert. I don't think a day goes by that I don't listen to something by SRV...rest in peace brother.
