So, I hadthe chance to a/b a LUKE and SS. I can't help but notice that there is one principle difference and it is obviously due to the pick ups but the SS has a raw tone compared to the Luke. I will not dare to say that raw or refined is bad but only in a side by said the luke sounds much more refined. Does any one who has played both have any comments on this or maybe their own version of the truth (since reguards less of what any of us say it's all true per our ears). There are so different yet equally awsome. I am also sure the pg on the SS plays a role.

I always kind of found the Luke to be overly bright for my tastes. The SS is a lot more even toned, I think. Passive pups ftw.

one thing for sure is there is no one size fits all .

luke , david gilmore , albert lee , & eric johnson ALL have amazing tone.
it's not about passive/active.........it's about magic fingers.

I think the refined description is a pretty good one. I had a Silo Special with EMG's, and while it had great tone, the pickups were very . . . I don't know, overly clean. i heard the term "sterile" used to describe EMG's. The humbucker sounded like a humbucker, but no extraneous noise. The single coils were the same.

Hi,

I agree that the Luke sounds more defined. I can compare it with my Silo, which is raw, just as the SS.
It is the EMG that does the trick, no doubt.
But I find it very hard to make a judgement. Gilmour and Lucious make great tones with those pu's. With me, it depends on my mood, the kind of music I want to play.
Before I got the Luke, I thought I would never like the EMG's, but I like them very much now, adding a new dimension to my playing.
Sometimes it is hard to make a choice between the two. Oh life is hard sometimes:D

Have any of you modded your Lukes to 18v I hear it does wonders for the way the pickups react. I have always been an EMG fan at least the in an LP. I never really tried them in a singlecoil guitar. I do find that the EMG's seem awsome for studio work.
