Hey Golem,

I think I understand where you're coming from, the STV is a very different, sort of art deco avant garde style of design, which can probably look like it has a host of ergonomic problems, however I have to say that the truth is that the design shape is actually quite comfortable, if not a little tough on the high access frets.

Rest assured the STV bass will also be player friendly and balanced. I don't work in instrument design but the lack of bouts/horns and headstock weight probably aren't giant hurdles for balance.

Has there been any additional information about this bass?

I'm in the market for a new bass at the moment, but maybe I can hold out a little longer...

Good question and good bump.

I feel like I'm always learning something new. I've never noticed "neck dive" or thought about "balance" before. Is this something that doesn't come up because I'm not on stage playing/fighting with an instrument for hours?

My education in bass guitar (sadly) comes from 1990's Bakersfield, everyone knew Korn (including me) and all anyone was doing was finding the longest straps available (I may not be exaggerating as much as you think here).

Anyway, I really enjoy when I catch these threads even if its just on the second go around. I especially like seeing the responsiveness of the EB family. What a fun forum.

Among the life-size rock star posters decorating the local
GC is one of some dufus playing a triple neck ax. Clearly,
showmanship trumps ergonomics in certain realms.

As to reasons you've never noticed ergonomic, most likely
it's cuz GOOD ergonomics, by definition, will go unnoticed,
and most basses follow the classic well balanced template
that was into'd as the original P-bass, and continues to be
the most popular type in use today ... obviously including
the StingRay/Sterling.

I can't wait to find out all the nitty gritty technical details about this bass. I hope more will be revealed at Winter NAMM :)

For anyone who hasn't checked out St. Vincent's new record I highly recommend it. I felt quite inspired after listening to it and created a composition for Los Ageless on my Caprice. So needless to say I am SUPER EXCITED about this bass. Please forgive my cell phones audio and the mess...I'm in the process of moving. ;-)

I believe I may have just had a stroke of brilliance. Imagine if you will, the St. Vincent bass equipped with Game Changer electronics. That would be incredible. :)

St.V will work great for a Short-scale bass. The neck sits further into the body. I would guess a slightly longer neck pocket with a bass would accomplish the same thing. This is one reason the St.V balances so well in guitar form in my opinion.

That looks fantastic. Well done. The headstock bothers me, but otherwise it looks great.

Thanks a ton, the neck is just part of my prototyping process, it's actually a $32 eBay buy that I had to investigate, haha!

You’re welcome. I like the finish, too. Are you going to make a neck from scratch?

Thanks, the finish was my first attempt at "shou sugi ban," a trendy fire/oil treatment. The silver/black shimmer on the Honduran mahogany grain looks way wilder in person.

Neck wise, I'm thinking of building or buying a solid wenge fretless deal. I've always built neck thrus, and I don't have any templates for or experience with bolt-ons, so I'm on the fence about it. I plan to build a tenor 5 tenor and a fretless 4, and those will be neck thru and scratch built, for sure. I really get into carving comfy heels and am curious as to how that will go with this body style.

I love the solid wenge neck idea. Oh, and yes to the fretless.

I’m a luthier, but I only build acoustic guitars. I made a really sick one piece striped cocobolo neck. It had purple and gold layers. I was inspired by the rosewood neck on my Luke 3.

Nice build.

...so am I to conclude that EBMM was never actually going to put out a St. Vincent bass? I mean, rumors are rumors and all that. I was pretty interested myself, as I dig playing my two St. Vincents, and I also play bass.

Correction. I just watched the video. I guess it was i the works, but Sterling changed his mind or something went sideways.

According to reps at NAMM last year, this has been killed. No one has said why. There has been a ton of interest in it, as shown in this thread for instance. It was my personal inspiration for picking up a bass again after 20 years of not playing, and also for being a mm guy. I would think it would at least merit a limited release. It is the one thing this company has done that really disappoints me.
