With a bunch of studio gear, you can make a passive bass sound hot. It is obvious however that he digs active and he digs MM.

There's some stuff, like 21st Century for instance, that have to be with an active bass, or else heavily processed to sound like so. The sound is just to powerful, if you know what I mean.

Absolutely, that picture upsets me. Every time I saw it in this thread I had to spit in my trash can.

I still get shivers when I look at it. I just hope it was a female photographer that took the picture.

i think i def her the 61 on there. But some of the tracks just have to be stingray or the flea bass. I know that his attack can make a bass seem more punchy than it really is but if you've ever played a vintage jazz with flats they have some bounce but they just don't pop out of a track like that especially rosewood fingerboard models.

I hear what you're saying about the sound...listen to his sound on Tell Me Baby. Sounds very Stingray. He does play with a very heavy right hand (which I love) but even so that sounds too hot.

He should dump those Modulus basses and just go Musicman all the way. :D

According to the June '06 edition of Bass Player, he used a vintage 60s Fender Jazz Bass that is actually worth a pretty penny. He came about it after he posted on a forum saying that he wanted a vintage jazz bass so that he could be "as cool as John Paul Jones." Someone found one for him.

I think it was Steebo who traced the pink down for flea?

very intresting BP... and I don't doubt it for one minute.

as for Fela's Jock...err Jazz bass, I do Bleeb that VBTC/DudePit/Our own Steebo found that for Mr.Balzary..... to which he wasn't really thanked, renumerated, etc. like what a normal polite person would have done but I'll let you search the threads to find the story again

I spent the better part of a month tracking it down for his press agent in NY with the help of Bill Bolton down under and we found it at Guitar Broker (Craig Brody's) in Florida. It was a surprise gift for him and Flea himself doesn't know the real story behind it. No biggie either way to me but at least a "thank you" from someone would have been appreciated.
