The Cutlass is a great "S" guitar and the pickups are very good. I'm partial to thick humbucker sounds as well, but still seek those sweet single-coil tones. A couple of things to try for the Single-Coils:
1: The Tone knob is your friend
2: Dial in your amp/rig settings for the Single-Coils. Seldom does one amp/pedal setting work perfectly for both a HB and SC.
Give your ears a chance to adjust to the tones as well. Maybe try out your son's T to test this
There are a number of well-known Tele players I have a ton of respect for, but I have to confess I find the Strat sounds more appealing in general than the traditional SS Tele configurations. But I'm sure I'll get around to playing it more. And, I'm pretty sure my guitar collection is still incomplete...
