I use birch wood casey produts to give it a good feel... i also tried this the other day and the neck is amazing...

I "wet sanded" the neck... i cleaned it with the Murphy's soap and used a little bit of Dr. Ducks Axe Wax on the steel wool and it cleaned it and sealed it...
it feels pretty good... but i was nervous as all get out trying it.

Might not be for everyone though!

well I'll be.......

Tried the steel wool trick today and it seems to work rather well.

But here's another trick I discovered today. I see some recommending to tape off the pups when using the steel wool. I thought that over and instead removed all the pickguard screws and lifted it up and HO HO!! I'll be darned. they put a connector in there to disconnect the assembly from the output jack. So simple and convienent! Thanks EBMM. I simply disconnected the pickguard assy. and removed it from the guitar so I could use the steel wool without worrying whatsoever about getting metal particles on the pickups or scratching the pickguard surface.
Beats taking off the neck too.

Unfortunately, I did find a small crack in the finish near the lower edge of the neck pocket. Don't ya wish someone would make a "finish crack fixer" substance! Could be applied like the stuff they use to fix cracks in glass windshields. If anyone comes up with something like this, remember, it was my though and you could be a congenial chap and send me some royalties. ;)

I've used 0000 steel wool in the past to polish my frets. I was told that Micro-Mesh is also commonly used to polish frets.

As far as using steel wool on the wood, I was told by my luthier that it is possible for some of the metal shavings to embed themself into the wood and they can rust if the guitar is in a humid environment and if you sweat a lot. I would think that using a very fine grit sandpaper would be better than steel wool for cleaning wood surfaces.

Jim,

I didn’t know that. Wonder if all MM are rigged this way? Great idea!

Dave,

I’m no luthier but I’ve never heard of fine steel wool embedding in wood, especially not a tightly grained wood like maple. Not saying it isn’t so, but it seems rather odd to me. Imo, fine sandpaper, even wet, is a lot more aggressive than 0000 wool would be. Personally, I wouldn’t use it unless I was completely refinishing the neck, and then I’d use it very carefully.

I rubbed down the wood around my front door! using wire wool, and a few weeks later after painting the wood with gloss paint, rust spots appeared - so do be carefull it can happen !

I don't like using wire wool on guitars 'cos of the "Beard effect" - my choice is a synthetic 3M pad.

I'm no luthier either, so I don't really know what is best. I wouldn't want to risk ruining the neck with either steel wool or the wrong grit of sandpaper. I guess naptha is safe to use to clean the neck, and saliva always seems to do the trick!

take the pickguard off to clean neck

for those that want to see the connector in the body cavity, and how easy it is to disconnect the pickguard and remove it.

as well, my neck came out very clean with 0000 steel wool

click on it

What's up? I'm still loving the GNX4. I would be careful with steel wool near inlays, but I never used it directly on an inlay so I can't say for sure.

I have another JP7 on the way, just ordered it today.

That's very cool, I've never seen the underside of the plug-n-play pickguards before.

I went to scope out a new JP6 today and was told that there's a five month waiting period. They still aren't installing the D-Sonic pickup either. It's still under consideration, but it's on indefinite hold. I'm looking for a Mesa Road King too.

Another tip/trick when using steel wool...

Instead of taping off your pickups, wrap the steel wool around a magnet. It will keep the little bits from going everywhere.
