Hi

I own a maple fretted 'ray but need a jazz bass type fretless. I'm very tempted to get a Sterling fretless but I haven't had the opportunity to play one.

I've played many Sterlings and love the tone and the neck but I was wondering whether any fretless Sterling players out there can let me know what the fretless tone is like in terms of 'mwah' and sustain...

Ideal tone is jazz bass style Jaco type tone...e.g. loads of mwah but still pretty warm and dark...

Any thoughts?

Boris

P.S. I know the obvious thing to do would be to buy a Fender Fretless Jazz Bass but quality/ neck has been an issue on every one I've tried...

I haven't tried an EB fretless yet but my guess is that it'll sound great. The fact that they use Pau Ferro for the fingerboard and not ebony is a plus right away. Just make sure to use round wounds and I can't see any complaints about a lack of mwah from a fretless Sterling.
always best to try first though
