I know this is a Music Man guitars forum but I couldn't find anything about Sterling guitars. I have a cheap acoustic and electric and since a JP6 is really expensive I am thinking of settling for a Sterling JP model. Out of the JP50, 60, and 100, which is better? By better I mean tuners, nut, pickups, and trem (since I want my next guitar to have a trem). I'm considering these guitars because of the floating non-locking trems. Either one of these or a Schecter with a Floyd, but I have no experience with those at all and heard that their a massive pain to tune and change strings one.

Sterling guitars are fine instruments and PatPark (here on the forum) runs Sterling guitars... you'll have information from him directly and from those here on the forum that have played the Steling JP line...

i've played the AX line and they're incredible guitars (really top notch) for the price point and would easily consider having one as a main guitar for electric. As with all the Sterling line they are inspired by their big brothers made by Ernie Ball Music Man... so the reputation and quality is carried over.
gi've 'em a few they should respond here soon

and welcome

I would go for a JP60 or a JP100, they have upgraded parts. Sterling is a great line of guitars for the money, excellent quality.
I have a JP50 that I use as back up for my JP6, it holds up incredibly well compare to the JP6. I also use it for teaching and has had very little issues with it.
Pat Park is a great guy to deal with. If you have any issues with your Sterling, he will take care of you.

JP50 has been discontinued. The JP60 Black Metallic is our baseline model for the John Petrucci series.

JP60 has jumbo frets, JP shield inlays, upgraded metal 3 way switch and the Petrucci Dome knobs.

JP100 will have same basic specs, but the body is slightly wider and has a quilt maple veneer top.

There will also be a limited run for Musicians Friend for the JP100. These will feature the Dimarzio Liqui Fire and Crunch Lab pickups. Available in Trans Black or 3 tone sunburst.

Okay guys, I need to know one thing. How reliable is the trem? If I can do the dive bomb at the end of the "Angel of Death" solo then I'l most likely buy the JP60. I know the JP100's basically the same but the finish makes it costs more and IMHO it looks ugly.

a locking trem and nut would give you the most stability. the locking tuner combo works great for vibrato and shimmers, but wouldn't be my first choice for dive bombing.

Is the switching system the same as on the JP6 giving you split coils in the middle position?

no. The middle switch position gives you all 4 coils, the volume drops a little and it sounds more single coily than either the neck or bridge humbuckers alone.
