Sterling HH 4 - Sound Clips

So uh, not sure how useful these are here, but I was doing it to test out new recording interface and felt like posting it. Maybe someone will get some use out of it...

2007 Sterling HH with maple neck
Played with a pick the entire time. I'm fairly aggressive on the picking fyi
EQ flat across the board
All 5 positions tested individually running through 5 different riffs
Hardware - PreSonus Firebox recorded at 24-bit and 44.1k Hz sampling
Software - Cubase LE

Sound is completely clean; instrument goes straight into Firebox with no software adjustments. Don't mind the crap technique... 4 common Tool riffs and real simple Metallica picking routine

Position 4
Position 5 - Neck pickup

Any comments about recording, my crappy playing, or overall tone encouraged!

Hi Kooldac,

The sound itself is quite nice (although I hardly ever use a pick). Yeah...erm... it's a Sterling. So nothing less to be expected, right?
But you should work on your technique a bit and make sure you stress the right tones right, know what I mean?! Get yourself a drumcomputer or something else to make sure your timing is right.

btw: ...please check Metallica's bassline of "My Friend of Misery" again. Sounds like your playing the wrong tones...

Sounds good man. I know this is not a technique critique but I just wanted to say something to you that I wish someone had told me when I was younger. Watch your muting, or rather, make sure you are always muting any string except the one(s) you are playing.

I've been playing 5 string a lot lately and one of the biggest challenges is adapting my muting techniques. I can't help to think that if I muted better to begin with, it would have been an easier adaptation.

Nice bass! That neck pickup alone is CHUNKY. It reminds me of the neck sound on my G&L L2000.

Absolutely, thanks for the critiques, folks. I actually am far better at finger style but felt like using a pick because its what I am learning now (only couple months in). thanks

Great bass, and lots of tonal options!! Good sound clips, nice quality... were you plugged directly into a computer, or were you using some sort of pre-amp, or mic'ing an amp?

A metronome will definitely help you lock in your time for sure, or having a drummer friend (with good time) that you can sync in with his kick drum. That is probably the one thing that really helped me become a more solid bassist is locking in with the kick... any band with a solid rhythm section always sounds better!!

Went straight from instrument to recording hardware - PreSonus Firebox. That feeds it to PC via firewire. I must say its a fantastic piece of hardware. Delivers perfect sound to PC. I will however say that its output to amp is kinda tone-suck. I really don't care as I just want to hear the notes as I play them but some OCD people might get annoyed. Maybe I should try output to headphones soon...
