Well, I'm a Donald Fagen guy myself with a nasty Rush fetish.

I should've said, "...that's "hi-fi" sounding bass to me."

If you asked me what bass to use to achieve a "Hi-fi" sound, I'd suggest an Alembic or a Ken Smith. How's that for avoiding a definition?

There ya go.

Actually, I think my Bongo is quite "hi fi" sounding.

It's all in the ear of the listener. Has as much meaning as "punch," "growl," or even "throbuphonic thumpuliciousness" for that matter. All of those terms conjure up a sonic image, but its exact nature will differ from person to person.

Generally accepted "fact": Different basses have different tonal character. Some of it comes from the wood, some from the pickups and electronics, some from the strings, some from the physical construction of the bass.

All else, such as slapping a label on a given bass's tonal character, is subjective interpretation.

So...what in your opinion makes a Sterling more "hi fi" anyway? The preamp?

When I think of good listening, Martin Logan's and Classe come to mind...:D

I knew that, sooner or later, an audiophile would show up here. I use Aragon components to power my Martin Logan Aerius speakers.

Just got my Sting Ray....It plays like low fat olive oil.........:p
Mine plays like nylon on pau ferro [with none of those nasty frets in the way]. Not surprisingly, it also *sounds* like nylon on pau ferro. I'm not sure what butter or olive oil sounds like. I get really crisp mwah. Are you getting great squooshie, or what?

Low fat with high fi? Now I get it. In Basspeak, Hi-Fi means High Fibre, so your bass isn't always farting out.

You guys are missing out on all that vacuum tube elegance. Of course, I gave up all that stuff for one of these

If anybody ever asks if you want mono, demand Tivoli.

Ahhhh, audiophiles...I just sold a classe 200 amp, matching cd and preamp...with kef 104/2's....killer system!!

Very nice, very nice. Never got to hear kef's. Always wanted a Classe system. Got too expensive for my blood after awhile. Felt my money was better spent some where else. Hmmmm, wonder where that could possible be? ;)

Along the audio lines, ever hear of Dr. Harvey Gizmo
