bdgotoh, thanks for linking to the earlier thread...

"The back curve of the neck where your thumb sits isn't a smooth curve, it has a bit of a "hump" in it, under the E string."

That pretty much sums up what I mean. Meatier on the bass side, flatter on the treble side.

Would be interesting to know whether that's factory or not!

Glad to help, inconclusive as it was. I can tell you I've owned several Sterlings that I bought brand new and they have that same neck profile, so the "someone modded it" theory doesn't hold for those. At least in my mind :D

I had a old Sterling ... gone now ... and don't recall
anything odd about its neck. But it did have at least
one woodworking difference compared to later ones:
the neck plate was recessed into the body. Maybe
there are other differences, like neck profile ?

I can go check the neck from my old Sterling, cuz
the neck is on a newer bass that I still play ... but
it's a FL neck, so thaz another possible variable :-/

I've had a number of Sterlings over the years and knew - or at least I believed I knew, which is good enough for me - that the necks were slightly asymmetrical. I do believe Brad and I have had this discussion before, too, and we agreed years ago that the necks were thus.

Neither one of us speaks officially for THE COMPANY, but we sure have had a lot of these things.

Frankly, if I didn't know us, I'd trust us on this.

The original Neck Profiles we're originaly cut close to a 1964 Gibson Thunderbird Bass.

Gents, the Sterling neck is NOT asymmetrical. The final sanding is done by hand and can vary ever so slightly. The only Music Man necks that are designed to be asymmetrical are the Axis & Axis Super Sport.

WillyD, thanks for posting!

So does this apply to the early Sterling models as well? Mine's a 94.

I'd appreciate it, Golem!

OK. It MIGHT have a very faint asymmetry, or I
might be seeing things. I can't feel it. Stretched
a rubber band acrost it to get a visual, and thaz
how I saw a possible extremely minor asymmetry.
It's so minor it could be a production variation.

I had a coupla MTDs which have a most definite
asymmetry and I found it to be annoying. Thaz
weird cuz I'm not especially sensitive about neck
profiles. I mean, I can feel the difference from a
Warwick to J-Bass, or from 1/2 round to flattish,
but I didn't even know my first Sterling was not
a Ray until I read the receipt ... It played easily
and sounded way cool [and it has an unusually
darker shade of swamp ash] so I bought it !
