So, I enticed kneeoh to tag along to an impromptu trip to see the Steve Morse Band in NYC. There we caught up with tommyindelaware and Pete DuBaldo. Steve, Dave LaRue, and their drummer for these performances Drew Betts went through some classic SMB and Dregs material and a couple of new tunes from the "Out Standing In Their Field" album. It was a fantastic performance as you can well imagine.

I hadn't ever seen SMB. I only had the privilege of seeing Steve and Dave play at EBMM's "Desert Domination" party in 2007 and Steve with Deep Purple, which kneeoh and I jokingly refer to as "Steve Morse featuring Deep Purple," because we were only really there to see Steve. kneeoh had been waiting for twenty years to see SMB, as he puts it.

We stayed for both sets on Oct. 1, and we came back for both sets on Oct. 2. I guess you could say that we made up for lost time, seeing SMB four times in two nights.

The second night I saw a grey-haired fellow in a Dream Theater hoodie. He was eyeing me, I suspected, because of my DT t-shirt. Between sets, he came up to me and complimented me on my shirt. Then, he said, "So, I have to ask you what you think of the drummer leaving the band."

I said, "Well, if he's got to do whatever he's got to do to be happy. That's fine." I went on to express my own personal feeling that MP could be back with DT sometime in the future maybe in "five or ten years."

He asked me, "Well, are you going to still come to shows?" I answered saying that I'd definitely come to DT shows in the future. Then, he dropped a little bombshell on me. "I manage Dream Theater," he said. I was floored! Originally, I didn't know if this guy was for real even though I had no reason to believe that he wasn't telling me the truth.

Later, as I went to say hello to Steve and to thank him for yet another great performance. Steve also complimented me on my shirt, and he said, "You know, their manager is here tonight." So, yeah...I guess it was true!

Anyway, the impromptu trip, which we put together the day before, was worth every penny and all the trouble of dealing with a four-hour delay trying to fly into LaGuardia Airport. We almost didn't make it. We were in contact with Pete throughout the day, and I think he was a little worried that we wouldn't make it. Thankfully, we did!

Tommy, Pete, Steve, and Dave, it was great seeing all of you! Pete, thanks for the EBMM and Morse swag! I'll post pics.

Please forgive the crappy cell phone pics. I was trying to travel light. Some pics from our seats at the back of the club for the first set on the first night.

thanks for the recap. Sounds like it was very worth the huge weather hassle.

I was thinking the next time i see SMB i'd really love to hear Eyes of a Child and The easy Way from stressfest. (just sayin')

Set list from the shows anyone?

I was there for the first set of the Saturday night show. It was one of the coolest and most inspiring nights of my life! Simply fantastic! My only regret was that I could not stay to see the second set.

The set was (not completely in order):
Name Dropping
Here and Now and Then
Simple Simon
John Deere Letter
Baroque 'n' Dreams
Highland Wedding
Ice Cakes
Rising Power
Cruise Missile
Cruise Control

Someone might have to help me out, I feel like I'm forgetting something.

I was there with my friend on Saturday and we staid for both sets. The really awesome thing about that was that the two sets were almost completely different, other than a few tunes from the previous set. Honestly I cant remember the whole set list, because I have also been listening to ONLY Steve's music recently, so I get confused with what they played and what I listened to on my iPod before that haha. Either way, the guys were absolutely brilliant as always! The drummer was really great and did his homework. Dave was on fire, and he literally could not stop playing...when Steve was talking Dave's fingers never stopped...as a matter of fact neither did Steve's while he was talking hehe. I love these guys!!! The material they played was very diverse and covered music from almost all the albums. The sound was GREAT, and it was even better the 2nd set, because they were warmed up already and I sat towards the back in the center where I heard everyone perfectly in the mix. I would have liked to hear a few more of Steve's classical duets with Dave, but I cant complain at all!!! They blew my mind and my friend's (drummer) once again!

I didnt take any pics, as I just enjoyed watching them. They were having a lot of fun up there and Steve was always smiling...the usual. He is such a great a peaceful soul. I went to say hi real quick after the second show but didnt want to take too much of his time since they were about to have dinner. I managed to ask him real quick about the blackburst Y2D, and he said there is a lot more work that needs to be done. So I don't think we'll be seeing that at winter NAMM yet.

Once again, a very enlightening experience seeing these guys, and listening to the beautiful compositions.

Oh, and they actually played 3 nights with 2 shows per night and Steve is also sitting in tonight with the Les Paul Trio. I really wish I could make it, but my damned schedule does not allow me to unfortunately. He said that he doesn't even know what they will be doing hehe.

Wow what an awesome show Friday was! Rob it was nice to meet up with you again and James it was great to finally meet you, too. I recognized a few people in the audience as having been at our Steve Morse and Dave LaRue clinics, and it was nice to chat with them again. I wish I could have gotten down there again on Saturday night but it just wasn't in the cards.

Tommy was working hard keeping Steve's rig in tip-top shape, checking tubes, redoing the speaker setup to keep the volume level down, etc etc.

Steve, Dave, and Drew sounded fantastic! I'm looking forward to tonight's set w/ Steve and the Les Paul trio.

You are right there Pete, I work with US Corporations and it is a pain with US/UK doing the date thing in reverse and can get confusing if you don't know which country/facility the data format originated. When I first got a DOB off Aziah I had to remember to do it the US format so I got the date right.

Whatever next, you guys will be driving on the right I guess just to make life difficult for us limeys:D

Did Steve play anything other than no 1 ?

What is that device taped to back of bridge some kind of guitar synth ?
I seen him have the blank backing on his guitar at times but not often with the device attached. That on there all night or just for certain songs ?

Cheers Baz

Steve only played #1 during the performances. Yes, that was his guitar synth controller thing with the pickup near the bridge. The actual synth looked like a 2-rackspace Ensoniq thing that was resting on top of the Engl heads.

You can see it here behind Steve and on top of the amp heads. Again, I apologize for the crappy cell phone pictures.

Yeah. The sound was great. Steve's sound was a bit brighter on Friday for at least the first set. On Saturday, for sure, he had a warmer sound. The two sets on Friday were very similar with the exception of a few tunes. Saturday was very different from Friday, though. On Friday, I told Steve that we would be back on Saturday. He told me then that they didn't have much more material prepared and I pretty much saw it all. I don't know. They must have rehearsed a few more tunes or something, because the sets were very different from the night before.

Tommy was working hard keeping Steve's rig in tip-top shape, checking tubes, redoing the speaker setup to keep the volume level down, etc etc.

Tommy was great, and so was the band. Very true!

Righto. Tricky European date coding system.

Yeah. Steve mentioned to the audience on Friday that Van originally thought he could do the show, but they later found out that the dates got mixed up for that reason.

He ONLY played his No. 1 all night long. That is indeed a Synth, and uses it for certain tunes where he recreates sort of string section for the arrangement. He keeps it there throughout the show. He's a freakin genius...the tone he had was to die for. Even my buddy drummer was floored by his sound. He described it as if it was processed through super computers/studio...in a good way that is. Just a brilliant rig used by a magical entity haha.

One has to love how humble he is too. I don't know how many times he thanked the audience for supporting his music over the two nights I saw him. He was very appreciative, it seemed.

I bought the three DVDs he had for sale, a couple of CDs, and a t-shirt. He seemed quite surprised by all of that, and he was very appreciative of my buying all that stuff.
