Hey Now,

I came across an old issue of Guitar World and one of the features is a John Petrucci lesson. He shows an arpeggio exercise that he learned from a Morse clinic. It's a great warm-up for alternate picking using a long series of barre chord shapes.

I am not too familiar with any of the Morse dvd's so I was wondering if anyone here would care to point me in the right direction.

Thanks

There are a ton of great Morse exercises, many of which are on his site in the "Lessons" category:
stevemorse.com: Sheet Music

One I try and practice is his "personal picking exercise":

There's also one which is similar to his "well dressed guitar" solo:

There's a closer one where he plays all the arpeggiated notes, not just skipping strings but I'm not sure where it is.

Not sure if any of these are what you're looking for ... but going through his lessons is a killer way to learn some new practice techniques. Petrucci is smart, keeping track of different exercises as he comes across them.

Man - you are so right! All his heavy stuff is alternate picked, even the stuff that sounds like he's sweeping.....I went to a clinic last year with him and he's such a top bloke - really cool guy. I used to have one of his personal models as seen in the interview with Sterling at the factory making the Y2 model (the grey/silver one). He didn't like the colour apparently and it made it's way to me......

I got rid of it for a Jem. Damn - I hated that flowery guitar!

Back on subject though - The 'complete styles' and 'highlights' are good as well as Powerlines.....

Good stuff, there's a wealth of lessons on the Morse site, thanks Beej.

I am going to scan the Petrucci lesson just in case anyone wants it, it's very cool and very thorough

Every time I have seen Steve play these type things (ala tumeni) I have noticed he frets the low E string with his thumb. Just like everything else I have learned by him on guitar, It just makes to much sense.

Pug I may have something for you when I see you in about 8 days or so. It's a shame you're not coming to the Rush concert. (you loser)

No problem guys, if anyone wants this as attatchment via email feel free to drop me a PM and I will get it out to you.

Gotta love Petrucci and his "spongelike" absorption of exercises like this !!!

Sorry Norm, Rush has never been my cup of tea but I look forward to seeing you guys next weekend.

I think I am going to have to add to my Morse CD collection as well, I was just looking at his site and there are plenty that I need.

Damn YouTube got me psyched about Simple Simon, the only reason I checked it out was because I remembered NorM raving about that track at the Desert Bash.

I was watching some of the older Morse YouTube clips and I noticed that he seems to anchor his pinkie (picking hand) against the end of the slanted single coil for some stuff, I wonder if that came up in conversation when they decided to eliminate that pickup on the Y2D?
