I'm looking to get a Steve Morse original model, and was wondering how these guitars are in terms of getting Tele or Les Paul tones. Unfortunately there aren't any local dealers that carry them stock. Thanks in advance.

the hummers cover the les paul stuff well.......
the 2 singles together do a real fendery sound....
& the single closest to the bridge does a somewhat tele sound......
but if you split the bridge hummer...it sounds very tele like.........
& even more so when u add a single coil to it.....

Five Way switch

Wonder if you could replace the 3 way strat type pickup selector for a 5 way. The 2 and 4 positions can be split coils on the neck and bridge humbuckers.

You could totally do that. You'd need one of those Megaswitches (check Stewmac). Other option is a push-pull pot for splitting both (I've done that).

Another option- wire up a 5 way switch with the config on the Y2D and use one of the toggles for the coil splits.

w/ a standard 5 way..............u could split the bridge or the neck...........but if u wanna be able to split both...u would need a beej switch.

i find 5 ways harder to use on the fly though......
morse geetars have ruined me...

Silly question, but what is a beej switch? What is the current setup/configuration on the 5 way selector for the Y2d model? Has anyone experimented with any alternative pickups? Steve use to have a tele neck pickup next to the bridge pickup.

A beej switch is tommy's way of referring to the earlier options presented by Beej.

The Y2D pickup selector works like this:

position

1 (bridge) - selects bridge humbucker only
2 - selects bridge humbucker + single coil
3 - selects single coil only
4- selects neck and bridge humbuckers
5 (neck) - selects neck humbucker only

Hahaha ... I'm honoured to have my own switch ... thanks guys ... :p

droptop- Stewmac sells a "Superswitch" which allows for a wide range of wiring options. With it you could turn the Morse's 3-way switching into the 5-way switching (pos2 & 4 being coil splits of the HBs) you suggested.

For the record, I'm with Tommy and love the switching of the original Morse. It's really logical once you get used to it. So I'd recommend sticking with it, and if you need to wire up a coil split, try a push-pull pot. It's not as quick as a toggle, but considering the Morse already has two single coils on board, odds are it'll be good for what you need.

Beej out.

I totally agree with that, I also like the EVH for the same reason

i never thought of that...putting a push/pull coil tap on an EVH...that could really mix things up?!

My EVH has a push/pull coil tap on it. You'll have to add 2 extra wires to do it though.
