Steve Perry was the second lead singer for the American rock band Journey. Love him, or hate him, everyone has to admit that he has one of the most instantly recognizable voices in rock music.

He is one of my favorite rock singer. Of all the great songs Journey put out, his voice put a stamp of soulfullness into rock, lots of r&b and blues feeling in what would otherwise be syrupy commercial pop.

Also happens to be a massive influence on a certain James LaBrie

I thought Perry was the 1st singer in Journey, prior to that they were a fusion band... am I wrong ??
Apperently he was a nightmare to play with, but as Neal Schon has one of rock's biggest ego's I think the band was an explosion waiting to happen, shame because some of their songs will always be in my top 10.
He has one of the greatest voices in history but I get so sick of all the crappy and soppy " I miss you, I love you " referencs in all his songs.
I think he's written all his great love songs and needs some new inspiration

Some Journey tunes do get overly sappy at times, but still great songwriting and melodies.
I think it's great that Steve took time off when he was drying out, instead of pumping out the same ol' crap like some of the other arena bands of his generations.

My favorite stuff is from '78, when Perry was new and shared lead vocals with Gregg Rolie. Songs like "Feelin' That Way" and "Anytime" are some of the best stuff out there. Journey hadn't completely made the shift to a total pop, commercial band yet, and IMO made their best music on Infinity.
As with other bands of that era that were musically handicapped by the power ballad, (Styx, REO Speedwagon...) Journey was no exception. While their musical direction proved to be enormously popular, it left the band a mere shell of it's musical self.

Gregg Rolie was the original lead singer for Journey. They were more of a "Jam Band" before Perry. Journey was formed from members of Santana, so the music from pre-Perry Journey is about what you would expect to hear from them.
Schon's ego may be big, but why wouldn't it be? When players like Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana want you in their bands when you are 15 years old, you gotta have some chops.

I have to say, James' voice on the current tour is simply fantastic. I've followed them from Images & Words days, and I have to say that his voice on this tour is the best i've heard. Dream Theater sound like Dream Theater with James.
I am a massive fan of both vocalists.
But weren't they amongst the best with the power ballad? There were so many pretenders that followed, that people often forget just how good they were.

My point is that two big ego's in one band is always a recipe for disaster, which is a shame when such great music comes from it.

I think history bears out that having two enormous egos in one band is usually great for the music, but bad for the band. Look at the examples: The Police, Van Halen, Journey.....you could go on and on.
Probably comes from the fact that you've got a couple guys that fight over the musical direction of a song. The compromise between the two ideas most often makes great music.

Steve Perry is one of my favorite rock vocalists and one of the most talented. He had both chops and style, unlike many rock or pop vocalists who came later who had only chops.
But to get back on track with this thread topic, it was interesting to hear Don't Stop Believin' played with a Silhouette instead of a PRS or a Les Paul. The guitarist put the 24 frets to good use on the second solo.

Epic band, it's plausible that if they had an even 'better' singer they would be more widely embraced/accepted.
