I starting using a floating thumb technique about a year ago (side of thumb mutes lower strings as my right hand moves around). This freed me from the need to anchor on the pickup of my SR5 H and I found I moved into Jamerson territory to get a mellower, thumpier tone (my strings are old- I'm considering flats). I play mostly P&W, gospel, blues and fingerstyle funk. I'm thinking about an HH, but I still like the 'authority' of the single H and moving my right hand from neck to bridge and back provides a lot of variation.

Try the HH: You don't loose the single H "authority" but add four other tonal "authorities" to it. Especially the neck H alone is a class in itself. And try some EB Group III flats on the H as well. They loose the "zing" but not the midrange.
