I doubt it's the strings. I'm going to bet that you have futzed with the bridge saddle heights and the truss rod. To get the action lower than what the factory sets it at, I usually turn the saddle screws a half turn or quarter turn (but I do them all the same amount). After that, it's just a truss rod adjustment due to weather/seasons. But I think you're way beyond the factory settings. Sounds like you need to take it to someone that does professional setups and have them set it up. They'll set the action the way you want it and they'll also check the intonation.

I think the strings had something to do with it, because the buzzing issue wasn't as bad with the Nickel Slinkys as with the Sunbeams. I actually just bought and put on a set of Steel Slinkys 45-105 and the buzz is still there slightly when I dig into it, but even less than with the Nickel Slinkys.

And as far as doing my own futzing with the rod and saddles - why not? I'm not making massive turns of the rod so as to ruin it. I'm just trying to get my bass to work right. It's an exercise in self-reliance. I'm a firm believer in taking the time to learn how to do your own setups and maintenance. Read "Zen & The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance." I wouldn't try a refret or something major myself, but no reason not to master basic setups for oneself.

And the factory settings are for Standard Slinkys, gauged 45-100. For me, 80 A & 100 E are too light, so adjustments were necessary to put on 85 A & 105 E.
