Very cool- I was aware of the hidden pickup, but never realized you could do this with it.

Damn...

Is this middle pickup actually "The Dummy" coil?

I must remove pick guard on mine Sterling to see is this "thing" under!

If it is, I'm gonna try the same test, maybe it could be adjustable for real use! :)
(only must cut the PG for this middle pickup  )

Don't quote me on this but I beleive the Sterling has a different pick up configuration than the SR HS. I think the "phantom" coil may be under one of the functional coils. I believe it is under the Humbucker in the single H version.

That's correct. The 4H Sterling's "Phantom Coil" is under the pickup.

OK, but what about mine 5 HS Sterling?

I mean, soon or a later I'll unscrew PG on my bass and back preamp cover anyway to see by myself, but You know guys my bass is still under warranty and I'm a honest guy!

I'm pretty sure the Sterling 5HS is the same as the Sterling 4H, with the PC under the humbucker.

No reason you can't take off the pickguard and look.

I also know recent manufacture SR5 Hs don't have a PC at all. SR5 HS, I don't know....

Thanks Bobster, that was really fast! :D

You see, I'm just curious if there are possible some improvements or personal setup for my bass ... etc. ;)

Anyway, I'll wait warranty to expires! (very soon)

Glad to help.

Just taking the pickguard off/replacing it won't void your warranty. In fact, EBMM sells replacement pickguards. Can't replace the pickguard if you can't take it off.

Anyway, have a great day!

The hidden pickup is not voiced for use as a regular pickup. This came up a long time ago when the first dual pickup basses were produced and someone (probably the guy in the youtube vid) went nuts, "It works! It works!"

Um, yes, sure, but it's not designed to be used as a "third" pickup. This seemed like common sense to me, but apparently common sense.....isn't.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure You're right bovinehost!

I was just playing a bit, and tried this simple screw driver to pole piece "touch" test.

I have a feeling that at Sterling 5 HS "dummy" is somewhere under the neck single coil pickup, 'cause when switch is in the position #2 (bridge Coil 1) there's some low feedback sound when touching pole pieces of neck Coil 3!

I'm too busy and too lazy to remove PG right now, but will do that once just for curiosity reason :D

Much more what bothers me is to find a way to sacrifice one of switch positions and rewire it for Coils 1 & 2 in parallel, so could have all 3 positions from single H Sterling + the rest of original HS wiring!

Or leave it like it is, 'cause anyway I'm planing to buy one more single H 5 banger with series/parallel switching and 4 band EQ, try to guess which EBMM could be that one? :D

A pickup HAS to work to be a hum canceling pickup, otherwise it would cancel single coil hum, would it? Doesnt mean it was wound or voiced to be a functional pickup. My $.02. never understood why that whole thing was a big deal, honestly.

The way I understand this is a traditional pickup has to have magnets to pick up a signal from the strings. It does not have to have magnets to pick up electronic noise (Or more correctly electromagnetic signals). Install a coil without magnets and wire it in the opposite phase to the pickup and it only picks up the electronic noise and cancels it out without canceling out the string sound.

I that does not help I can give the explanation another try with more detail.

That's the same way I thought about this matter!

But as You can see in this video, SR HS have real single coil under the "hood"! :D
Or this guy make joke with us and he put real single coil pickup instead dummy, who knows?

Any notification from official EBMM customer service?
