hello,

i just brought home my first stingray yesterday (a new 4 string 3EQ). when i plug it in here at home, i hear a very noticable high frequency buzzing, ...but ONLY if i'm not touching anything. when i touch anything metal (strings, bridge, metal knobs, etc), ...the buzzing goes away. sounds like a grounding problem, but i don't know much about bass pickups/electronics. i tried my other 2 basses and i hear nothing. any ideas ??

btw, i didn't hear this noise in the store, ..but the store was VERY loud. i tried a different cord, a different outlet (on a different circuit), ...but nothing helped.

I'm thinking ground inside the basses' (sp?) wiring, from my obvservation. You (literally) are closing an electrical circuit when you touch something metal.

My EVH's exude the same behavior, though one is just a little louder than the other on that aspect. Once I rest my hand on the strings, toggle, or on the Floyd, gone. I've been meaning to get them in the shop to correct this, but haven't had the time or motivation (read: lazy guy here :p ) to do so yet.

In either situation, I don't think it's anything doomsday-ish, but definitely something that should be checked out/corrected eventually. Maybe something is loose, or could use a good resoldering?

Good luck, bro! :)

ahh.... grounding issues... the bain of my existence!! :D
With my two custom made 5's this was/is always an issuse which has lead me to finally buying a SR5 fretted and soon to be matching fretless. I tried to suss out what it was and took the fretted to a few guys in town and to no avail. The weird thing is that in certain settings it's better and others it's worse. Which leads me to believe that it starts in the bass and then the various settings of room wirings etc. exagerate the issue. I haven't had any problems with my SR5 though so it should be easily sorted through your dealer/EB certified repair shop.
All the best though 'cause we all know the joys of having to deal with grounding buzzes.

cheers.
