I like Jazz basses! And not just cause of the neck but the neck is very nice to me. I'll may eventually get a Jazz 4 string to get a passive bass. They sound nice in a more quiet setting. That way I'll have both basses that are at the top of their game both active (Musicmans) and passive (Fenders but Jazz in particular for me).

This may not be necessary if my upcoming Bongo is as versatile as people say. Maybe if I string it up with flats it can pull off the passive Jazz sound.

I like the thinner nut size neck of the jazz style basses. My 63 Fxxxder has a great neck - feels at home in my hand. Most basses I have purchased since getting the J have been done so based on getting the same feel as my 63. I have found that in Laklands and Sadowskys. I have now found it in the Sterling. Last time I tried an SR4 - I had some sort of disconnect with the neck - but after reading all your comments - I am going to try again. I do like the feel of the neck on my SR5.

Jazz basses for the majority of my playing years. I now have a StingRay, fretted Bongo, and a fretless Bongo. I have not touched my J-bass since. It is in the closet. I was going to sell it but my wife wants me to keep it for sentimental reasons - her's not mine :) so in the closet it sits. I have always loved the feel of the JB neck but once I switched to the SR and Bongo I feel much more at home.

OK...finally played a decent jazz to compare necks...

Ok all....been a few days working my ass off but I finally had a chance to sitdown and compare my Stingrays neck to a decent jazz bass neck. The one I played was a Victor Bailey Jazz Bass, and also a plain old American one. OK...I do like the Jazz bass neck...a lot. Enough that I am currently trying to figure out a way to finance that Victor Bailey without my wife shooting me. But, the Ray does a lot of things only a Ray can do. That and the Ray neck may not be the easiest on the hands at times but you just need to man up to a Stingray...after trying both I have to give the love to the Ray first. Especially this Envy Green LTD I own, nothing better. The interesting thing I found is that the Jazz neck does feel different in my hands than a Sterling, which I dont like but the Jazz works well. Strange...but, thanks all you knuckleheads for throwing down with opinions it really does make it a pleasure to come here and see all the interaction, even if we sometimes get a BIT biased...LOL. Time to go drink some Newcastle and enjoy the Global Warming here in New England.....:D

I bought a Stingray a few months ago and loved the maple neck and playability. Gassed for a Jazz Bass with it's thinner neck, sold the MM bought the Jazz. .................................I just sold the Jazz to go back to the Stingray neck and it's tremendous playability, not to mention the AMAZING Tone of the MM Humbucker.

Now go do the right thing.............

I agree;
similarly, I disagree 'philosophically' with the word 'battle' in terms of music (bands);
to me, music is a 'collaborative' or 'cooperative' thing
rather than a 'competitive' or 'combative' thing

Interesting (odd) how 'arts' and 'marketing' do or don't come together in positive ways depending on individual perspectives; similarly, how 'music' and 'industry' get mixed;

Had some good licks with my Jzz5 yesterday; just about to get into some good ones with an SR5 right now; Lucky me :cool:

Agreed, they are both good. I pretty much learned to play on Jazz basses and have had about 6 (4 MIM,2 MIA) of them over the years.I always wanted a Stingray but it took me about 10 years of playing before I could finally afford one. I recently got a good deal on a used MIM Deluxe Jazz W/ active electronics.I have three EBMM's and had been with out a Jazz for about 4 years so i't's kind of cool having one again.I like it much better that the American Jazz I had for 3 years which I guess doesn't speak too well for the people in Corona,CA. Would I choose it for a gig over my Stingray? Hell No, but it's definitely good for what it is....

i like J basses. theyre fine instruments. i had an 03 MIA Jazz and it served me well for a while.

to me the J, P, SR4 and Sterling necks ALL feel different. they all have something different going on.

Beacuse it's #4 in line behind my SR4,SR5 and Sterling. It's a good bass but I just feel that my EBMM basses play and sound better. The J sound has it's place and if I needed it for a certain song I would use it but otherwise I can pretty much cover everything with a Stingray. As far as the necks on Jazz basses I think they are very comfortable but so are Stingray necks.It's all a matter of opinion and/or personal preference. Play what you like and play it like you mean it....:)
