I saw the Polyphonic Spree last month. Great show, great band...but this had me a bit confused:

Why???? Why would you remove the H and install a P style? crazy.

I stole the pic from their new video seen here: Video Premiere: The Polyphonic Spree, 'Running Away'

I think I read somewhere that in standard positions, the back of the P pickup just touches the front edge of the MM pickup? In that case that would be a neat mod IMO. Best of both worlds.

Actually, some of the earliest Stingray prototypes had split-coil pickups that looked like P pickups but with one big pole per string. So maybe they're being retro.

maybe. when they started setting up their gear, i from the headstock i was thinking "cool, he's rocking a stingray". he usually plays a crazy looking retro bass, so i thought maybe he wised up a bit. then he turned around with it on... what the hell? no humbucker? i thought it may have been a model i had never seen before, then i noticed the humbucker cavity.

i know it's a free country, but it just seems sac religious to me.

"Blasphemy!!! You can't mod a musicman bass!!!!!!!!"

Come on folks, I'm getting sick of reading these types of ignorant replys. Can you use your brains and take a guess why somebody would put a different pickup in their bass?

Very good, because they didn't like the sound of it. How bout an even better one, because they wanted too.

then there is this ignorant reply......

"why not just sell it and get something else?????'

uh........cuz that person doesn't want to. maybe they like everything about the bass, EXCEPT FOR HOW IT SOUNDS!!!! (i.e. plays great, comfy neck, nice weight, nice balance, etc.)

Maybe it has some sentimental value, or, they may like the color, maybe it was a gift, etc. etc. etc.

I can think of many reasons why someone would mod a bass to fit their needs, but only one to not.

GET OVER IT.

Calm down.

I'd be the first to tell you to mod your bass if it moves you to do so, but I don't see any wild outrage in this thread so far.

If you're sick of reading these kinds of replys:

"hey, it's his bass. He can do as he pleases" or "that would be a neat mod IMO. Best of both worlds" or "maybe they're being retro"

Then I suggest you stop reading them. No one has yet suggested that he be hunted down by the Spanish Inquisition.

It's the Music Man Forum. You might expect that a P-bass pickup in a Stingray might be met with a bit of skepticism, right?

So remain calm.

oh, i'm calm. Just thought I should type in some caps to prove a point. anyhow, my post was aimed at original poster, so the use of the word "replys" doesn't really fit here. But, it's not like I haven't seen these types of posts, mostly replys, all over this place for years. (aswell as other bass forums)

Also, as far as I'm concerned, it makes not difference that this is the eb forum. that is unless, people take offence when they see mm basses modded???

by the way, jaco should have never ripped out his frets and changed to v/v/t.

People have opinions.

Some will dovetail nicely with yours, some will not. People will post them or they won't. Either way, as much as possible, I let people have their say.

Also, as far as I'm concerned, it makes not difference that this is the eb forum.

I'm not sure that I agree with you that it makes no difference, but again, you're free to have your opinion.

by the way, jaco should have never ripped out his frets and changed to v/v/t.

Now on this, we do agree, but he wouldn't listen to me.

We're all MusicMan enthusiasts over here. Go figure that we would say it's a bad idea. Remember who pays the bills for this forum.

I'm all for someone modding bass. Although I wouldn't go to a company's forum and brag about it. It's like going to someone's house and taking a crap in their grandfather clock.

Like I said, he can do as he pleases. If it makes him happy then i'm all for it. Really no reason to try to jump on us about it. Hope you hang around and enjoy the forum. :)

Yeah, I know you're musicman enthusiasts, so am I.

who does pay the bills here? you? all the members?

who was bragging about what? you lost me there.....take a dump in a clock, ok.

I didn't jump on anybody about it. I've been hangin around long enough to know that when a new guy mentions a pickup swap or mod, that person gets jumped on by a bunch of eb members. sometimes the respones are down right rude. I honestly can't say that I see that on alot of other forums about other basses. pretty close minded dont ya think?

Who pays the bills? Well, we're on the Ernie Ball forum which is a part of the Ernie Ball website. I think you get the picture.

When the company has asked nicely to not discuss mods on their forum, don't you think it's quite polite to warn newer ones not to but keep it friendly at the same time? I realize that some can come off as rude but they mean well. Close minded? Absolutely not. Again, I said that whatever makes a person happy, then they should go for it.

Don't you think coming onto a company's forum and trying to tell all of us how we should accept things is kind of rude?

Again, I hope you enjoy your stay here.

Yeah, I know you're musicman enthusiasts, so am I.

I'm glad to hear it and glad to have you here, but it's perfectly okay for people to have negative opinions about modifications, especially the so-called aftermarket "upgrades".

I'm not a fan of the Old Boy Pile-On, and try to keep it nice and clean and neat and respectful. It was more common in the past; I'm not an idiot. I've harped on this with the regulars and this thread didn't seem to cross any lines. It really looks to me like you were spoiling for the slightest hint of "modifications are bad" in order to leap in and bring it all to a halt, by God.

I'm a big fan of 'he who moderates best, moderates least" - a Jeffersonian approach, if you will - but you can't expect me to do nothing while you overreact to a few innocuous comments about a P bass pickup in a Stingray.

who does pay the bills here? you? all the members?

It's the manufacturer's official forum. There are a number of ways to look at who pays for it, but only one person signs the checks. We've talked both online and offline about how to approach these subjects, and I think I have a pretty good handle on it.

I didn't jump on anybody about it.

I beg to differ. "I'm getting sick of reading these types of ignorant replys. Can you use your brains....." - seems a bit of a jump to me. "then there is this ignorant reply....." Well, you've just used ignorant twice, haven't you? I might be able to get away with that - but I don't. I don't call anyone 'ignorant' and I expect others to play at least as nicely as do I.

This includes you.

I've been hangin around long enough to know that when a new guy mentions a pickup swap or mod, that person gets jumped on by a bunch of eb members. sometimes the respones are down right rude. I honestly can't say that I see that on alot of other forums about other basses. pretty close minded dont ya think?

As I said earlier, I try to keep the loyal followers from leaping on anyone who dares to, say, replace the preamp in a Bongo (which one of our most regular members has done - ask him if he was burned at the stake).

Has it been over the top in the past? Yes.

Has it gotten better? Yes.

Was this particular instance over the top? No.

Do I think your response was unwarranted? Yes.

So the thread is closed, not because the response to a guy slapping a P pickup in his Stingray was a gaggle of guys foaming at the mouth, looking for blood, lighting the torches and advancing on Castle Modificationstein, but because you went overboard with 'ignorant' and so on.

Play as nicely as I do and we'll get on just fine.

Jack
