Hi, I play my stingray trough a swr bass 350 with a triad I cab. I find that the sound is a little agressive around the hi-mid region.
A friend of mine told me that the pickups in the recent stingrays (bought it in 2005) are not really good and suggested that i change it for a bartolini pickup. I'm not sure but from the specs on the bartolini site, the replacement pickup is passive and not active like my stingray. I'm thinking also that maybe it is the pickup's preamp that would do more if changed ?. I would also like to be able (if possible) to install a toggle switch to change from active to passive, is it possible ?, i'm pretty sure i am not the first person to ask that. Anyways some light on this would be nice !.

Thank you

Firstly, Barts are wonderful pickups. I have owned a plethora of them on various basses.

That said, the quality of MM pickups is outstanding, and have been for, well, basically ever. Stingrays are however, geared for a specific tonal quality that might not be flattered by your current amp. Have you tried really working with your eq options and/or trying your SR on other amps?

Tone is the result of all ingredients, not just the bass...

I have not tried other amps, from my point of view I think that the amp is very flat, But it could be the cabinet, any suggestions ?. For the active/passive thing any comments ?.

thanks

What Joshua said. Particular amps/cabs can emphasize certain frequencies that might not always be pleasing. The Stingray is, of course, an aggressive sounding instrument, but not in an annoying way.

So is this guy a guitarist? The pickups in recent Stingrays are the same pickups as in older Stingrays, going back quite a ways. Bartolinis are very....'polite' pickups and don't have the bite of the stock MM pickups. I am being very nice about this because I know some people love Barts. I do not.

Stingray pickups are passive - it's the preamp that makes it active.

I'm thinking also that maybe it is the pickup's preamp that would do more if changed ?.

There are so many factors in your final sound. I'd suggest doing some simple things first before modifying your bass. Play your instrument through some different rigs and see if you're happier with another amp or cabinet. Strings can make a HUGE difference, too.

That said, I am entirely in favor of modifying your instrument if it makes you happy, but you should really investigate what you're unhappy with before spending money and making changes to what is, in its stock form, one of the best instruments on the planet.

I feel that everyone who walketh thru the valley of the shadow of hotrodding needeth to armeth themselvth with a 1/4" jack on a foot of wire with really good insulated clips at the other end. This little jumper cable allows thee to play thy PU straight out to thy rig. Helps isolate what elements of the tone chain jerketh thy chain whicheth way.

OOps, almost forgot that I'm dealing with fellow bassers. Warning: This is a test procedure. Do not gig with the test jig installed. Professional drivers on closed course. Do not attempt this on the NJ Tpk.

Truer words have never been spoken, that is certainly true.

It's a clubhouse, and you'll get all kinds of different answers (and styles) but generally you'll get a number of opinions, some which agree with me and some which don't. I like both kinds. Makes me think, and I generally need a kick-start when it comes to thinking.

Welcome aboard. Once you get to know these guys, well.....I'm not sure how I want to finish that.

The SWR Triad (15, 10 + tweeter) is a very hi-fi cabinet (fantastic for recording), so first thing I'd do (as with any SWR cab) is turn the tweeter attenuator down to zero. That should make a hell of a difference.

I liked the fact you called him a "newbie" and yet you joined pretty much at the same time. "We all have different styles and personalities?" You speak like you've been here forever! Get off the high horse dude, you only achieved senior status due to all the "trouble" that went down not so long ago, boosting your posts through the roof!

Simma down fella. This time, BigBallz did nothing but make a harmless joke. He's learned the ways of the forums. Granted, he learned in a much rougher manner than most but I respect him just as much as any other member now.

Chill out.

Well Howdy pardner!! First, I did not join when he did. Since you want to bring up my past, I joined earlier, but changed names about a month or two later..so I have been here a lil more. Second, I called him a newbie, cause that's what it says on his avatar. He has only posted a couple of times.

Now, I don't know why you are so upset over this, but just thought I would give you some facts. So....you may continue...or move on.

I have respect for the other forum users so I will move on.

The important part to me is.. Did he get his question answered? Can he find enjoyment playing his SR along with his SWR amp and cab?

Maybe he will let us know down the road how or what resolved his issues.

Now I am going to run before the club comes out.
