Hi Guys,

I need some advice about the sound you can get from different Stingray models. I could only try the classic single humbucker SR but not the new ones with HS or HH configuration.

What I like to ask is:

-- Can the HH or HS rpoduce exactly the same sound set of the standard H ?
-- I have and want to keep my Fender J 5 strings, but I also would like to get a Stingray 5, any suggestion as far as pickup config is concerned ?

I attach here the possible pickup position for each of the models for reference.

Thanks a lot in advance !

Paolo

Coil 1=Bridge Humbucker (coil closest to bridge)

Coil 3=Neck Single coil

Position 3=coils 1,2,3
Position 4=coils 2,3

Coil 2=Bridge Humbucker (coil closest to neck)
Coil 3=Neck Humbucker (coil closest to bridge)

Position 1=coils 1,2
Position 2=coils 1,4
Position 3=coils 1,2,3,4

IMO the HH Ray and Ray5 I played sounded EXACTLY like the Single H model when played in single pickup mode. Also, with both pups going, the basses were capable of a grunt that may have you selling that Jazz Bass. Just MO, dont take it the wrong way.:D

Ive never played a Sterling HS so I cant comment on that model but I have owned an SR4 before and currectly own and SR4 HH.

A couple weeks ago I was at a guitar store and played an HH Ray and HAD TO HAVE IT. In that same session I played a couple "normal" SR4's ... but the HH was the "must have".

I would agree with Travis and say that the "what you're used to" Stingray sound is there in the HH version. The HH has rediculous versatility. Postions 2, 3 and 4 were my quick new favorite bass tones. Great defined toned thre and that's without turning the EQ knobs at all. but with after some time with the HH I started LOVING the neck H solo'd (postition 5). Its one of my most used positions now ... along with 3 and 4.

And if all that's not great and amazing and awesoem .... the classic stingray tone is there too! THe 2 PUP basses really are a big win for us bassists. you get A LOT more bass ...

So i vote you try the HH and the HS and see how they compare. Personally, ive been BLOW AWAY with how these bad boys sound!

I agree 100% with phatduckk....the HH SR4 has the "classic SR sound" and more. Lots more!!! On last night's gig, I practically lived in Position 4. These HH basses can range from a cutting SR tone in Position 1 to a fat, almost-URB thump in Position 5. Go for the HH!

Yep, position 1 does it on my HS SR5. Although, I tend to stay in positions 3, 4, and 5. (That kinda sounded like text from the Kama Sutra!)

I love the single-coil setting on my SR5 single-pickup.

So I'm thinking that I'd like the HS -- as I'd get that plus all the other settings.

I wish the stores up here would get them in stock so I could try some out. then I could have a meaningful opinion.

Sounds like you can' go wrong! I've heard some say that they like the HS best for the 5 -- Bovine maybe?
