Then I would just go there and BUY the proper box. I've found that their so called "GUITAR" box is a bit short for EBMM basses in the case. I had to add a little extra to one end of the box to make it work,

Plus if you WORK for such a great shipping warehouse, why would you be WORRIED about shipping? Very confusing.

Because I've seen what UPS has been able to destroy. I handle all the claims. I've seen double wall boxes sealed with reinforced tape literally folded in half. And I've also seen huge 6 foot long boxes "disappear", and the "overgoods" department at UPS is basically a black hole. We've almost never been able to get anything out of there.

If there is a Guitar Center, or other music store near you, you should be able to get a bass shipping box from them without spending any money.

Yep, my plans exactly. I just need to find time to get over there. I've got rehearsals and gigs and weddings after work until after this weekend. Then I can start hunting for a box, or 2 boxes I can combine.

I've tried to get boxes from GC and other local music stores. They rarely had anything that FIT the length, so I would have to use 2 boxes taped together.

As far as concern about the shipping company breaking the bass in case in half, I've heard of people getting a sheet of plywood and putting it on either side of the case inside the box. It would obviously add some weight, but if you get a good deal through work, it's an easy way to add some extra strength to the box.
Of course, with you working in a shipping facility, I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know.

I actually once shipped a bass in an oversized box. To fill the gaps I used two cheap air mattresses (POOL KIND) on either side of the bass case. Blew them up just enough to make it snug. The buyer was very happy that I went through the extra trouble.

Actually.. wait a minute. I bet I can order one through U-line. They have boxes for everything. question is will it be big enough. Anyone got the exterior dimensions of the SKB plastic cases handy? All I can find is the INNER dimensions. Way to go SKB, way to not have the total specs listed for your products. Exterior size can be a major determining factor when purchasing a case.

Ok, last question: what is the recommended setup for the bass being sent? I've heard some say to remove tension from the strings, while others say that's something that should never be done. Probably going to send it back this week sometime.

Just send it as is. Think about it. How many basses have you received where the strings weren't tight? I've bought about 10 EBMM basses, and they all came with tensioned strings. Almost always in tune too.

I should mention that one time I received a bass trombone (currently my main instrument) via mail (parcel post)
They had simply taped the case shut, and sent it like that. When I saw it I was utterly horrified.
It was completely fine.
Right now I'm more curious as to what exactly is wrong with it. I've been emailing AJ doing some prelim tests he suggested, and it looks like it's something in the preamp. The switching works as it should. I also found out that when my SR5 was being made, they were doing a Stacked Single as opposed to a single and a phantom coil.

I'd lean towards no, I didn't test for it but didn't notice any.
I was just so surprised at the volume difference , my sterling hh volume between pickup selectors is dead even , quick way to change tone with fiddling with knobs

Anyone with ceramic SR5 or a Sterling experienced some noise progression while cranking up the treble knob?

The noise I get mostly falls within the area covered by the High control, so turning up treble would definitely increase it.
There normally will be some volume difference between positions, as there can be phase cancellation, parallel wiring and series, etc. depends on the specific setup.

As can be seen in my sig, I have two HS basses. The main reason being I love the single coil tone at the neck and bridge.
There is a volume drop when you switch to the single coils. This is the nature of the beast I’m afraid. It is less obvious on something like the Big Al, but that is a different switching system. Still, no matter what happens, going to a single coil from Musicman humbucker will always give you a drop in volume. You are switching from one hell of a powerful H to a more calm single coil.
Just to confirm, I used my Ray 5 HS for a long 3 hour home practice on Saturday, and with a fresh pair of Slinkys and a new battery, the bass exploded into life.

I intend to make a video on my iPhone about the Ray 5 HS through my Genz Shuttlemax 9.2.
The switching gives a very low ‘pop’ between positions, and there is zero hum. Dead silent.
