Stingray/Sterling 5, same neck?

Hi, not been here for a while as my Stingray 4 just keeps doing the business, with its EB flats (type 3?) I think I may need to get a 5 string and my choice would be a Stingray or Sterling. It does seem that they may share the same neck, is this the case? I did try to find out on FAQ but without any joy.

I think the new Classic 5's look unreal but I think I would miss my 3 band. Don't know how long it will be before a Classic 5 is in the UK to see if I get on with just 2 band and slab body. Also.... is the neck on the Classic 5 the same as the existing basses, and does it have the oiled not gloss finish? Lots of questions, sorry

I had two SR5s and now a Sterling 5 so let me anoint myself qualfied to answer your Q. They felt the same to me. Both are juuust right in width and excellent front to back.

I played with a 2 band Classic in my local GC and I felt that you give up nothing in terms of tone if you choose to go that route. It was just as versatile as the 3 bander AND you earn the convenience of not having to worry about the jack bending against something when you play while seated.

Thanks for that. I do tend to boost the mids quite a bit as I play in a jazz/fusion sort of band and go for a bit of a mid/parpy/Jacoesque type of tone. Can one get quite a middy tone from a 2 band? Did the Classic have an oiled neck or the older style gloss ones? thanks again, Bob

IIRC the GC Classic series has the excellent (and fast) waxed necks while the Classic Deluxe has the beautiful, classy poly finished necks.

Bob, well everything is possible, but according what You wrote above, I think You are more Sterling single H player!

You see, Sterling H have switch which can split H pickup into a single bridge side coil with hidden phantom hum canceling coil!
In that position You can get jazzy single bridge coil middle tone and when cut some highs, add lots of bass, maybe add some midds too...that could be Your jazz/fusion tone!

You'll have to try it by yourself!
