I recently bought a '98 Stringray fretless 5, love it but the headstock is sticky...is this common? Any hints to clean it?

Have you tried a damp towel? EBMM headstocks are all finished, even if it has an oil and wax finished neck. If it's a "natural" headstock, then it has a satin poly finish which stops at the nut. if it is sticky I would assume something got on it and it would just need to be wiped off.
