Hello anybody:

I was wondering if you could provide me with some opinions or insight. I recently purchased a Stingray, and based on the FAQ's I see the default string set gauge as 45/65/80/100. It seems the string tension on the D and G strings is a bit "tighter" than my current feel preference, and the A string is getting in my way when raking the strings with my plucking finger. I am primarily a finger player, not slapper. I was going to change to a ligher 40/60/75/95 to reduce string tension and give a bit more "bend" to the strings. Does anybody have any opinions on necessary truss adjustments, or should the current factory setup be adequate with that gauge of strings. String height and action are fine currently, it's just the string tension I'm trying to dial out.

Any info would be appreciated.

You might want to give the Thomastick Infelds a try. Flats or rounds, they're generally lower tension than anything else out there.

If you're primarily a fingerstyle guy - I am - you may even want to consider the TI Jazz Flats. Livelier than any other flat I've ever tried, and I think I've tried them all!

For good discussion on these strings, try this URL:

If you go with any sort of string that has less tension than your current set, you may have to make slight adjustments to the truss rod. Loosen it - counterclockwise - a quarter turn at a time until the relief is where you like it.

I've heard good things about the TI strings... Even at the same gauge do you believe they would provide less tension? I.E. E-ball strings at 45 65 80 100 would have more tension than a same gauge TI set?

I don't know the numbers for tension on the EB strings, but I have played them. Opinion only, I'd say yes, the same gauge TI strings would be lower tension than the EBs.

This is one of those questions that can be answered on the forum I mentioned in the post above. The TI rep is really good about knowing such things, and he hangs there regularly.

For what it's worth, although I am now completely converted to the TI Flats, I used to like the strings that came on my Stingrays.

string trippen

It seems to me that if you are tripping over the strings that its a matter of setup and not tension. It is not uncommon for a store to make adjustments to an instrument after receiving it. String height can make the tension seem tight.
