Hi,
I am thinking of acquiring a Music Man Stingray 1999
I would like to ask your opinion as to wood tone variation in this neck.
I've never seen one like that.
My best regards
Hélder Luís

Hello and welcome to the forum.

To my eye it looks like someone refinished the neck, but I think they did it in sections.

i have an evh with the same kind of thing on it. i presume it has something to do with how the wood absorbs the oil and wax.

i have had no issues with the evh neck so i wouldnt be too worried :)

The first line you see is headstock finish vs the oil finish of the neck.
2nd thing you see in the midle of the neck is just some figuring of the wood so no big deal.

Thank you, fellows, for your help,
I feared that the change of color could be due to something serious had happened to the neck.
So it's merely aesthetic ;)

Is that a figured ribbon separating the two colors? If so I think it is just the look of that piece of wood. Maple is one of those woods that gets its look not just by grain, but in how its pore structure (it has pores, jut very tiny) reflect light. If you get a piece cut where the pores change direction. it has a very uneven appearance and can age out to look like 2 different coloirs (one area drinks up more finish than the other). I have stacks of maple necks, some with original finish, some raw, that have a similar look. Usually it has a sort of curly ribbon of various widths separating where the change happens. But not always.
