stingray v sterling

last night at band practice, my guitarist brought a music man sterling in that he owns for me to use as a back up to my stingray. i noticed that the sterling seemed a little louder and it had more bottom to it. my stingray has the a 3 band eq and i had the sterlings pickup switch in the mode that makes it sound the same as a stingray. i just wanted to know if sterling's are a louder bass or is it just that one inparticular. every thing on both basses are stock, my stingray is a 2002, but the sterling is older atleast a 97.

I'd say that the Sterling is "louder" than the Stingray. The sterling has a somewhat compressed sound, which allows it to cut through better.

I find me Stingray has a more complex tone, which reduces is percieved volume.

You could just run it through a "loudenator". That would make it louder.

Ive wondered the same thing about my sterling in comparison to my stingray 5. To the best of my knowledge they both have the same preamp. My sterling is a 94 and I believe my stingray 5 is a 2000. But I can definitely tell a difference in there sound. The sterling seems to have a thicker sound than my stingray 5 not that im complaining I luv them both so much and in the market to buy a nother sterling.

I know that when I switch from SR to Sterling, I have to put a 10 db pad on my wireless or it distorts... you can plainly see the difference he meter...

Altough EBMM are some of the most consistent basses in terms of bass to bass similarity, there is always a slight varience from on bass to another. It certainly isnt a bad thing. It gives you a chance to find the bass really fits you and your playing style. For instance my last Sterling purchase wasnt even planned. I walked into Guitar Center and played a white sparkle model and it was the hottest sounding EBMM I've ever played. It also had the most bottom end I've ever heard from a Sterling. The fact that it was clearence priced at $740*, just after white sparkle was discontinued made it way too hard to pass up.

* I know all of you price watchers are having a hard time with the price of $740, but the dealer at GC said that they recieved a 15% rebate from EB when the finish was discontinued.
