I play in a band that plays all originals. I usually play a SR5. We play 6-8 songs that are begging for a old school r&b tone. I also have a SR4. Would flats and a piece of foam get me a good, old school r&b tone?
Flats would be a great start. I've been using EBMM Group IV flats on my SR5 for over a year now. Never tried the foam thing, but it covers alot of ground in Motown, and old R&B
Every bass sounds better with flats. The foam old school music with the flats.
Not just any flats they need to be nickel flats. Stainless flats may as well be rounds for the first 4 years they are on your bass. LOL
I like the low tension flats that I dare not speak the name of.
There are many great brands of flats out there. I play a particular brand which retain a nice top end zing which never gets in the way. IME they are the best flats I've played and I've tried a bunch!
