I was browsing through some old bass magazine when I found this ad...

The interesting bit is the stuff about the oiled finish stingray with no pickguard or control plate.

The magazine is from early 1995.

Is this something that ever made it into production?

The closest I've seen to that would be the '96 20th Anniversary stingrays. They had no control plate with a rear-mounted control cavity, and the pickguard was glued on so there were no screw holes.

Has been a long time since I posted something, but I'm very busy. Yet, I everyday check the forum for some interesting news and stuff (and also the pictures of your basses :) ). Anyway, I remember Jack had a matte finish SR4 (black PG and RW fretboard IIRC)... Don't know about the no PG- and controlplate though...

You recall correctly, but that other stuff is news to me. But every day I learn something, so let's see what the factory guys say about it. As far as I know, those options - no pickguard and no control plate - didn't exist outside of artist basses or the 20th Anniverary Stingray.

That matte finish Stingray was also one of the few EB Rays that had a B prefix serial number. Who has that now?

Intersting stuff!

Never seen nor heard of them. It may have be something for the European market.

I remember Jack's Bass. It was Natural with a matt/satin finish rather than the high gloss. I'm pretty sure it wasn't oil. I'm positive it had a pg. I think he sold it. I recall it had a "B" prefix serial so it would have been a 1997 model.

Jon or BP will know.

EDIT: I've crossed posts with Jack.

I will check into this. Might have been a custom run for Strings and Things as we did a few for them back in the Mid to Late ninties. The finish was most likley the Natural Velvet which we offered back then. Kind of a dull rub non-gloss natural stain.
