Hi, I just purchased a 2004 Musicman Sterling bass in mint condition. The original owner replaced the stock pickup with a Norstrand MM4. My question, is it possible to sell the stock pickup without the preamp? Does the pickup function with any preamp or must it be a musicman sterling? I hate to see the pickup go to waste and rather have someone get better use out of it.

Thanks!
Joe

Whatever you do, don't get rid of the original pickup. Put it back in and sell the Nordstrand instead.

The stock pickup really needs the stock preamp. If it were my bass - and I liked the aftermarket pickup - I'd wrap the stock pickup in saran wrap to keep it pristine and if I ever sold the bass, I could offer it for additional small change.

Given the noobie nature of the question, it's not
quite right that no one has yet pointed out that
an original MM PU is irreplaceable and cannot be
simply purchased from EBMM if the desire arose
at a later time. OK, now thaz fixed. It should put
some of the previous replies into clearer context.

Dear new brother, please be aware that MM does
NOT sell bodies, necks, PUs, electronics, bridges,
and maybe I'm forgetting some items. The very
few items they sell are typically locally replaced
minor parts that see some wear with heavy use:
Tuning machines, nuts, switches, etc, ... and, oh
yeah, you're allowed to buy all the PGs you want
so you're not stuck with the color combinations
that GC always orders ;-)

i agree with all above..
keep the original pickup in case you should ever need to sell it again. the money you gain by selling the pickup alone might not be covered because the bass will collect a lower sum :)

also, maybe you would want to try the original pickup to see if you like it better?
i love to tinker with things so if it was mine i would be all over it to find out :)
