While I was looking to get a replacement Musicman SKB case for my Stingray I new Musicians Friend had them. Now what gets me is that the case is considered a "heavy item" & is ineligible for free shipping if you spend $199. The kicker is that a Stingray bass that comes with the case IS eligible for free shipping & is NOT considered a heavy item.
Anyone? Theories?

Try calling the customer service line rather than ordering online....I had a similar experience and after explaining that the shipping charge was the deal breaker, he waived it. They want to sell.....

It actually is "oversized" not heavy, they get hit from UPS on that......

Yep. That about sums it up.

I just order one of these:

Great case BTW!

I got shanked for $3 extra because the box was big. I didn't mind the $3. Now if it had been $30...

That looks pretty sweet. I'm happy with my leather Levy's gigbags, but that'd be a real contender if I was in the market.

I used to use gig bags when I played MIM Fenders but I'm not so keen on using a gig bag to protect a $1000+ guitar.

I bought a perfect Lakland JO5 a while back. It came with a gig bag. By the time it got to me it had an ugly dent in the top of the headstock. It took me a few times of looking at it to figure out what had happened, but eventually I figured out that the zipper had caused the damage to the bass. Lesson learned.

Gig bags...

For the kid to keep his instrument clean while under the bed - Yes

For anything else.... Uhhhh... No! ;)

Not a kid, and it certainly doesn't stay under my bed. It does, however, take my Bongos to gigs safely, and in style. Thick leather with 1"thick padding.

One trip load in with no harm coming to my basses.

It's only an issue when you use a gigbag designed for a MIM Fender level instrument, and not one designed for a $1000+ instrument.

To all:

You've apparently not seen this gig bag in person. Before I had seen it myself, I said the same thing.

This thing won't even bend in half when it's empty!

The way I'm wore out at the end of the night after a gig & then doing the load up, I personally wouldn't feel safe with any my guitars in any type of gig bag.......but that's just me.

C'mon man...that's not a gig bag, that's a suitcase! :p I'd be afraid someone would swipe it at a gig. I prefer the SKB case the SR5 shipped in. The case for my Lakland weighs a TON, a real armbreaker.

Another thought - and reasoning - behind my aversion to gig-bags...

Young kids in the house and their inexplicable desire to walk/sit/stand on anything placed in their proximity!

Heh--one of the nice things about the Levy's leather gigbag is the door hook that comes with it. :D But, yeah, kids would certainly make you have to adjust how and where you store your basses. Good luck!

They ain't cheap, but they are extremely nice.

How much was that leather bag?

I got both of mine used (one looks it, the other looks brand new), but they are about $300 new. Expensive, yes, but this is of the same quality as a nice leather jacket.
