Well, since you guys/gals are my favorite people on the web and everyone here has tons of experience I thought I'd ask!
The army is gonna spring for a couple new straps and I'd like to know if anyone has some superb recommendations on great straps. I normally go with leather and I like to wear my basses relatively high, because all the ribbons, medals, awards, and buttons on my uniforms can scratch up the finish. I tend to play 5 strings on gigs, so comfort is a big issue. If you can recommend anything, I'd really appreciate it. Also, we order this stuff online, so if ya know a site where we can purchase, that would be great to! Thanks!

Oh yeah, this is taxpayer money, so no 150$ custom martini straps! :p

Levy makes really good straps of all sorts

I suggest you get a Thick Padded on Look on there site to Find the one that brings out the color in your eyes the best because they have alot

I have on that's brown not to fansy like 2.5 or 3 Inch's wide and padded... I have little shoulders
and that was too big for me

I personally get really thin straps that aren't padded they hurt the least for me after hours of playing ..

I would have thought you'd sling it low to avoid medals on your chest, unless you pin the medals over your nuts.

That said, for basic, comfortable leather straps, you can't go past Colonial Leather. They make some 4" wide padded straps that won't break the bank and are comfy enough for me to sling very heavy basses (read: 11lb-14lb) for 4 sets.

Levy's, 4.5" wide, which is about as wide as you can go without the edge of the thing being off your shoulder anyway. Nice thick padding, the usual outstanding Levy's quality. $50.

This one is fairly new...only been out a few months. I've never seen it in a store. I got one from MF and it's the bee's knees.

Well Mark, I have all kinds of ribbons on the pectoral, and 4 huge, ugly, gold buttons on the abdomin. I've found that if the bass is just right, then I can miss the buttons and the horn arches just beneath the medal ribbons.

I'm currently looking for a korean tailor to custom make me leather "sleave'ish" thingy that will protect the back of my SR5. I hope they can actually do it, but it's totaly unique and scary to them. There are a few fabric protectors out there for the rear of upright accoustic basses, but I've never seen any for electrics.

I'm still looking for good straps though! So please post'em!

Hello,

I too would recommend Levy's. I have their straps on all of my basses. Danica is great to deal with there and a class act. I cannot say enough good about them and how they treat people. I have never had a problem with their straps. I would buy at least the 2.5 inch width to help with weight if it is going on a 5 string and you do long shows.

Don't buy Italia straps. I did, and I liked them fine until one strap left some dye in a bass neck. Tried to contact them about it, but no reply.

Yikes! I was just about to recommend Italia straps since I recently got a custom-made strap for one of my 'Rays. I'll have to watch out for dye problems!

Levy's is also good; I've never had any problems with Levy's straps.
