I just had to use that title for my first post... :)

I've been getting a little impatient waiting for my new Silo Spec to arrive after being thoroughly convinced by this forum alone that I had to have one. [I've been playing for 15 years and have no idea why I never considered an EBMM until recently]. So I stopped by my local shop today to check out some JP's and Axis to get an idea of quality/fit/finish/etc and came across an Axis SS that just spoke to me. The color isn't what I usually prefer (blueburst over quilt), the neck woods aren't what I would normally look at (maple/maple), and the distance between the body and strings is greater than I'm used to..... but this guitar just sounded so right. It literally said "forget what you're used to and go with what surprises you". Ok, it was the sales guy that said that, but he was on to something. So I asked him if he would consider an '06 PRS CU22 as a trade. He said he could probably work something out, but I won't be back until tomorrow. So here's my question...

What would you consider a fair street price for an ASS, non-piezo, matching headstock? They are asking $<street price edit: arin>, but they typically have higher store prices than most, and I know I can get a better price than that. I'm just looking for a reference point for value, because the current attainable street value is probably closer to $<street price edit: arin> for my PRS.

Hi Jason

Another convert huh? Welcome to the forum.

There's no turning back now!!!

Unfortunately under forum rules we are not allowed to discuss prices for new guitars on the EB forum - and I guess by "Street Price" that is what you are after?

My rule of thumb for any typical street price (not just EBMM) is around 75% of list. A good relationship with a dealer can get you in the 65 to 70% range.

As mentioned no one will quote direct numbers here. Usually dealers have MAP agreements (minimum advertised price) and cannot publically mention sale prices below this.

I'd say take a look at prices online. Average them out and you'll get a rough idea, though different music stores may vary in price. It all depends on demand and how long that particular guitar has been sitting there (or how often they get orders). Remember, it doesn't hurt to haggle.

Best place is to look for guitars similar to what you want on Ebay. That should give you a good idea. Good luck and welcome to the forums.

Fair enough on the publishing prices thing. How about this, given a fmv for my guitar at $1600 in trade, would I be overpaying for a new Axis based on the config that I mentioned above?

I checked around online and was able to come up with a very general base figure, but I didn't find an ASS with a similar configuration as this. The problem is that there just aren't many new EBMM's readily available online, which was a pain when I went looking for my Silo. So I wasn't asking for a specific price for that guitar, but more of a generally accepted price range.

The kicker was the maple fingerboard. I absolutely hate maple fingerboards, I've always been a rosewood/ebony fan. But after playing the maple board on the Axis, I totally changed my opinion of what a *quality* maple board can be like. I think it pairs well with the basswood body. After playing this particular guitar, most of the others I played sounded lifeless.

Texas Finally!
The ebay idea is good, just because it is not the same color does not mean a big price difference, you could also contact some dealers to get an idea, also look at GC and Musicians Friend to get an idea, as far as your trade a dealer wont give you fair market price, you would be better off selling on ebay or somewhere else and just using the cash, oh and welocme to the forum, almost forgot my manners:)

I love the maple neck on my AL and also the maple neck/basswood body combo of my EVH.
I so much like the rosewood board on my other AL.

It would be hard for me to say which is my favourite - but maple would just about sway it.
I certainly prefer it to the Ebony I have on 2 other guitars.

But once you are hooked on a neck it could be made out of anything.

Seriously, now you're on the EB bandwagon, it will be hard to get off ha!

Give a couple of our dealers a call/email. Pete DuBaldo is a great guy.

Options like Pacific Blueburst and a matching headstock adds to the price. Also, are you thinking vintage trem or hardtail?

Welcome to the darkside!

I started with rosewood and then moved to ebony fretboards for the first 25 years of playing guitar but I absolutely love maple on ebmms! I love how they feel - sound - look - taste?

I'm loving the vintage look.
