I use a piece of an old Fender mousepad I cut to fit perfectly under the bridge. Doubled over it holds it up enough for the strings to be nearly at tension once replaced.

Nothing, actually :) I just let the trem go down into the cavity all the way, put all the strings in and recreate tension by tuning them in.

Of course, the back covers are off on the pets...

If you are cleaning the neck as well, definitely use something to block the strings off so you can do so. If your looking for household items that work, try a small stack of post-its. Gets the job done just fine. All of the others one listed are perfect as well.

I've had success with a folded up paper towel roll under the trem.
