I decided to lower the string height on my SR5 a bit. Got the action really low with absolutely no buzzes anywhere, but on the E-A-D-G strings the tone got kind of choked out and didn't sustain real well around the 6th to 7th fret. So I had to raise them back up a bit. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hmm... when I did the credit card test holdin down at the first fret and at the end of the last, it was exactly a credit card thick at the 12th fret. Uh-oh.....maybe that should tell me that I've been wearing my credit cards pretty thin!!!

The credit card should be placed at the 5th fret...not the 12th. Also remember that is just a ballpark measurement. YMMV. Play around with it a bit and don't worry too much about measurements. You will know when you have it right because it will feel right.

The action on my sr5 is set fairly low too. The neck has just the slightest bit of relief. no buzzing or anything like that. I haven't lost really any sustain on any of the strings either. Although i did have a scare once before a gig about a month ago. My guitar player (idiots. All of them) <----just playing chris if you're reading this, picked up some strings for me cuz i didn't have time to go to gc and get them. He bought tapered strings and i didn't notice it untill i was tuning my guitar. What a terrible night. I could only play on the first four frets.

man, you guitar players get personal. John, here, take a joke. Its free. Lighten up a little. I play guitar too. I just play bass mainly. I was only playing. My guitar player checks these forum things too and it was directed at him. I meant no offence to any of my fellow forum junkies or guitar players. PEACE Bro.

I've been trying to lower my strings, but I can't get them down without fret noise. I've pretty much decided to get them as low as I can w/out noise and learn to play it that way. I still wish it was lower. (This low action thing is new for me. My Fenders are set really high!)
