Question string shelf life

I purchased 5 sets of Earthwood Silk & Steel soft in Nov 2010.
I live in Panama and this string set is not sold here.
This past September I installed a new set and noticed that there was some corrosion on the 1st and 2nd string.
Today I changed strings again and noticed the same thing.

Since I am now ordering more strings, I would like to know what I can do to extend the shelf life of this product.
