Hi,Has anyone has changed on a SR5 the string guages to E A D G C and had a positive or negative result ? Just curious as the music i play with the band i´m in needs a fairly light sound and using the low B as it is is causing some distress to the guitari players !!, I ask in advance because the nearest pro music shop is almost 60 miles away ! And does Ernie Ball produce a C string for bass ? Regards Peter (Spain)

Another solution is to tune to CFBbEbAb. I have
several 5-strings tuned up like that, including 3
SR5s and it doesn't bother the necks at all. The
added tension is actually fun to play. It's really
nothing extreme, and it subtracts a lot of the
boominess from the low strings, which I expect
will make your bandmates happy. Plus, it's free
to try. Nothing to buy, no 120mi round trip :)

causing them distress? that's odd. I would just use it less then. It's not like it goes that much lower, but it's nice to have a low D sometimes. and of course the C and B.

You could string it like that very easily. I used to string my fives with a high C. Yes, EBMM makes a high C. You can either buy a six string set or buy a 4 string set and purchase a single high C string. I know Bassstringsonline sells singles.

HuH?

Golem you are a freak! :D

I love it.......tbone

CFBbEbAb is not any sorta alt or drop tune. It's just the
normal 4ths, but is 1 semi-tone sharp across the whole
shebang. It's less boomy, more deep-humming, and has
more really clean low notes than BEADG ... cuz it's clean
all the way down to open C which is not usually the case
with 'normal' tuning. IMNSHO losing 1 note at the very
bottom, and an inferior sounding note at that, is worth
the result . Also, you can set a lower action before you'll
get buzzy, cuzza the higher tension. Thus no extra work
for the left hand. And the right hand ? I just leave that
extra work to my amp. YMMV.
