cool, i really would like to go for real bottom end ****. will look into it. i have a nice trace elliot amp and double cab combo, so i think the amp could handle it, could anybody please give me info about massive attack's bassist, what he tunes to , what guitar, strings, amp, he uses etc. i would be really grateful for that info as that is the sound i'm after.

A lot of that comes from production, rather than tuning lower.

You might want to look into using an envelope filter. For deep dubby tones I use (IIRC) a Dodd FX25B with the sensitivity wound right down so the envelope doesn't open. That's a trick I got from Bill Laswell. On a Stingray, you have to set your on-board eq flat though.

Other tricks include using a subharmonic synth or octivider (I've yet to find one that works well for me, but then I've only tried a couple) and using a bigger speaker (like a 1x18" cab).

cheers bud, i am going to go down to soundcontrol (against my better judgement, as it the only place handy on my lunch break) and see if they got any of that material, ...so u think most of the massive attack bass sound is due to production? i don't just mean on the albums , seen them live a few times and the bass sound was incredable.does the term production refer to live performance as well as recording...i genuinly don't know  if you have heard the songs SPECIAL CASES OR SMALL TIME, SHOT AWAY, that is my "we're not worthy, we're not worthy" type ideal bass sound.

I wasn't really talking specifically about Massive Attack, but their live sound will certainly be helped by a sound engineer...

went down to sound control, tried an octave thing an envelope filter, i did like certain things about both, obviously didn't have to log to spend as i was on lunch, but with the octave job it seemed to split the signal and with the envelope there seemed to be a slight delay sometimes? madness. possibly just need more time jammin with it.
