Stupid amp/speaker questions

This actually sounds like fun.

My Sunn 1200s is still right there, next to the Markbass rig.....hmm.

Just out of curiosity, how does the Sunn stack up against the Little Mark?


My dream rig is to run 4 Bag End S-15's like the one in my sig off of the Sunn-however, I can't imagine that the effect on my house would be that positive...

There are some differences. The Sunn has a tube preamp and 1200 watts and, if one chooses to use such things, a compressor and graphic EQ.

The Sunn gets loud and gritty very quickly without really giving it much thought. With the LMII, loud is easy but gritty has to be dialed in. It doesn't take much thought, but some.

When we ran both heads through the same cabinet (Ampeg 4-10), the difference wasn't enough to worry about.

Plus the Sunn has a little weight problem, as I'm sure you know.

Next time I head out the door to scare people with coWpilot, I'm taking the Markbass.

I still love the Sunn head, but it's just impossible to beat the weight, power and tonal capabilities of that LMII.

I mean, probably, but that amp has been a workhorse for me for a number of years now - and outlived many a bass. It isn't going anywhere, but then again, I doubt it ever leaves the house again.

Sounds about right, from what I've experienced with mine. I don't usually use the compressor or the EQ with the Bongo; the Bongo preamp is plenty effective for equalization purposes. As long as you don't turn up the preamp gain too high, the Sunn stays surprisingly clean-although the overdrive channel can get plenty raunchy if the need arises.

The Little Mark probably weighs less than the power transformer in the Sunn.

Yes the 5.3Ω is greater than the minimum 4Ω so technically it will work. How it sounds/works in actual practice depends on how the power divides to the speakers and how they end up sounding etc.
I built an adapter box that I can plug standard speaker cables into to get a series combination. That works fine. I wasn't thrilled with my particular combination of 3 8Ω cabs at the time. YMMV. I didn't see much gain for me and didn't like transporting 3 cabs.
