OK so last night I had a headache, thinking about all the work I'd need to do just so I can claim el moddo Sub 1. Then it cam e to me...Rio Grande pups and Bill Lawrence makes thos humbucker replacement pups that are P-90-like. So there you have it, no pickguard to buy, no routing juts replace the pups and I have rich single coil tones from my SUB 1. Now the Bill Lawrence pups are less expensive, however the Bastard and Fat Bastard Rio Grandes sound awesome...Texas style!

Attaboy Raz, that's the idea :p

Though you still have to rout if you want to put in a middle PU - which you'd need if you want some quack.

Yes I thought of that, and perhaps that'll be another project...I am satisfied with the middle postion on a humbucker guitar...I can see what I get from the fat singles and if I want to change I can simply route, cut. and add a switch...I think!

Raz,

Refresh my memory. What guitars do you have. I know you have at least one Sub. Do you have any of the standard models? If so, how does the Sub compare to them? I'm going to wait till next week till everybody gets back to try to figure out what guitar I'm gonna get. If my budget allows, I'm thinking of either a Sil, Axis, older Axis Sport, or a Luke. If I have less of a budget, I'll go for a Sub.

thanks,

Al

Well as far as EBMM's go I currently have 2 SUB 1's (and one more on the way) and a JP 7 string. I used to have 2 Silo Specials (one H-S-S and one S-S-S) and for a brief stint an Axis Sport (or Super Sport). For me I felt the pups on the Silo Specs were a little to vintage, I preferred the rock ready stock SUB pups...as far as playability goes my SUB 1's are really really nice to play...I'm not going to sit here and compare, although I do believe, with a proper set up, the SUB's can hold their own. As far as the Axis went I found the neck width to narrow.
If you can get buy the somewhat plain look of the SUB 1 then I say go for it, it's a rugged well built guitar and I find the painted neck actually helps during those humid times. You can buy these next to new for around 350.00 US, now where can you get a quality, well oiled machine built in America for that kind of dough...

I'm surprised! I don't think it's plain looking at all. It does have a look of it's own though. Very original I might add.

If you like the polished look, then it's not the way to go.

Well that's what I meant, like a Sport vs. a highly figured maple top Axis

I personally like the looks of the red with the diamond pickguard. I've got to stop this. I'm about 3 months away from being able to get the guitar, and already I've spent about 10 hours just looking at them.
