Hyper excited probably covers it right now.

I am nearing completion in the first of a two stage upgrade to my Sub 1.

Now, I have to start this as a teaser thread, because I have yet to photograph all the mods

Much discussion took place on switching and pickup choice, but I eventually opted for the established DiMarzio D Sonic/Air Norton setup, with the JP6 inspired three position switching. Whilst I felt this potent combo would rock things in the right direction, how could I pull out some authentic single coil tones with real snap? Hmm, we need a single coil in there, and we need it mounted towards the bridge. The DiMarzio Area '61 seemed just the ticket.

So, clear inspiration comes in the form of the Y2D pickup layout. Born then was Project Motrucci.

So, here was the scoop on the original plans:

Phase I

Wonder Wipe frenzy on the rosewood ‘board
Hybrid Slinkys
Schaller M6-IND locking machine heads with pearl buttons
DiMarzio D Sonic DP207F
DiMarzio Area '61 DP416
DiMarzio Air Norton DP193
DiMarzio EP1111 four pole three position toggle switch
Push/Pull tone control
Knurled chrome Vol/Tone controls.
Abalone Pick Guard with a very specific layout

Phase II

Not Even Slinky setup for C Standard tuning
New nut (if required)
Graph Tech Ghost piezo saddle system
Modified switching to accommodate Graph Tech system
Knurled black controls (possibly)
Add a multi pin output from all pickups

The multi pin output will be controlled by a homemade footswitch controller which will switch pickup config, and simultaneously trigger Line 6 software patch changes in Gearbox or POD Farm.

Phase I has turned out exactly how I imagined, right from the single coil placement, to the toggle switch position. The controls follow the pick guard outline contour, just as I wanted.

Now, huge thanks has to go to Jimmy at the Guitar Repair Shop in Glasgow. Jimmy clearly gets a grip on what you’re after, discusses any potential conflicts from experience, and does a faultless job. The Abalone PG is incredible. So much so, I asked for two! I had the remaining material cut for a 2nd PG blank, which may be used for a completely different layout later (EMG Vince Gill VG-20 most likely). Obviously I’ll need an EBMM with maple ‘board for that (so how easily I convinced myself of the need for a Silo Spec? :D).

Phase II will feature a Graph Tech piezo system, and a possible change over to black knurled control knobs.

I have Hybrid Slinky's sat ready right now, with an eye to fit Not Even Slinky's at a later date (tuned to C). I am going to let it all settle in for a month or two with the current setup first.

Phew!

Feel free to throw some observations/comments/abuse this way!

Edit: It does exist; jump straight to the pics later in the thread if you prefer.

Cheers!

Hey- sounds very cool.

FYI, the single coil next to the bridge gets a neat sound, but it's not your standard strat bridge sound. It's too far from the bridge for that. So another option is a coil split on the bridge HB, if it sounds good like that.

Love to see pics when you've got 'er set up.

Sticky,

I'm happy for you, but mad at you at the same time.

Why?

Because I keep bouncing back and fourth between modifying my Sub-1 or just selling it to get something else. I have so many project ideas for it but no time for projects. I know now what I'd want to do with it, but don't want to touch it because once it starts, it will have to be finished. I'm not even going to get into all the stuff I would have to do.

Oh.....and the requisite....without pics, it doesn't exist. :D

Cheers beej, once I get a feel for the pickups i've bought, I'd like to hear a coil split. I'm years behind you guys with mods, so i am very grateful for any input. The initial switching is a good start, but i am by no means finished with this little wonder.

At the moment, the DiMarzio EP1111 provides JP6 style switching from the two humbuckers, while the push/pull on the tone control switches between the EP1111 output and dedicated single coil output.

Nice one! ....let me buy u a drink for the PG u sent me and sit and geek out on guitars.

Quality idea fella, a summer beer in Glasgow could just be the ticket

.... I keep bouncing back and fourth between modifying my Sub-1....

Thanks Jack. I stalled on the Sub mods for quite a while. I wanted to take that great robust Sub finish on poplar body, add the Y2D layout flexibility and sprinkle in some JP6 tones with a tasty coating of Silo Spec style Abalone pick guard.... hope you chaps approve when the pics are posted.

WOW, thats a super mod, nice, like your thought process on this one:cool:

Cheers fing, i'm hoping to post some pics within a day or so, I really hope they do the project justice.

.... Looking forward to seeing the pics.

And so, the pics shall begin.

Here we see the rather awesomeness of the Schaller M6 locking tuners fitted:

Looking great! Now some of that body's hawtness!

Oh, now we're talkin', brother! :)

The modified control layout required two areas of wood to be removed, one for the volume position, and one for the DiMarzio EP1111 switch. The following modified MM layout shows how the design was planned:

Here is a snap of the routing that was required in the control cavity, and in the pickup cavity (for the DiMarzio single coil).

More to follow in the morning, finally revealing the fantastic Abalone pick guard ;)

OK, so we've restrung with Hybrid Slinkys, and are nearly good to go.

Here's a quick pic in Photo Tuning, with the pearl buttons aligned.

Here's a first look at the guitar resting in it's furry home.

Trying to capture the Abalone in artificial light is nearly impossible!

Anyhow, here's a first pass at the pick guard.

I'll get some good pics in the daylight, and get them posted.

First thoughts anyone?

Really very nice :):):)

You succeed to create a nice variation. As a SUB and Morse owner, i have to admit that I am jealous
Waiting for other pics ...
