Obviously I can't speak for either Motrucci or Morse it occurs to me that there would be two primary reasons for going down this route,

1. Space,
It seems particularly prevalent on HSH guitars but I know that some players (Ritchie Blackmore, Robbie Robertson) even found it a problem on Strats. The middle pickup when placed in the trad middle position gets in the way of some peoples picking.
Ritchie dealt with it by winding the pickup down outta the way fine as long as you don't want to use it.
Robbie moved the middle pickup back so it was next to the bridge pickup.
2. Tone,
Maybe the added treble response that moving the pickup backwards would bring is what they want to hear.

OK, so we've restrung with Hybrid Slinkys, and are nearly good to go.

Here's a quick pic in Photo Tuning, with the pearl buttons aligned.

Here's a first look at the guitar resting in it's furry home.

Trying to capture the Abalone in artificial light is nearly impossible!

Anyhow, here's a first pass at the pick guard.

I'll get some good pics in the daylight, and get them posted.

First thoughts anyone?

Sweet! looks very nice! How do you like the sounds?

Wow! Thanks guys :)

I have a clear picture in my head on how I want this project to progress. I have tried to stay within the realms of the EBMM influences that have been adopted, which you can probably spot; having noodled around for the evening with the guitar, I reckon these mods really expose the flexibility of the Sub 1.

The single coil was indeed moved towards the bridge to capture more treble response. In a previous thread, I debated on just how to position the pickups.

Having now played hooked up, my initial reaction is that the Area '61 placement is probably not close enough to the bridge to get an ultra bright tone, but that was to be expected. It is unusual where it is; very clean 'n' clear, but with real purpose. Actually that pickup has been the surprise so far. It's a subtle little thing indeed; really responds to nuances from the fingers. In the hands of someone with better chops, I reckon that pickup could be very expressive indeed.

First impression of the overall sound was centred around the JP6 inspired switching, with the middle position inner coils. Going between that and the Area '61 with the push/pull is really interesting. The single coil is slightly lower on output, but I still have to tweak pickup heights. I was a bit surprised by the output of the middle toggle position, I might check a few things there. The Area '61 really responds to delicate playing, and open chords reveal a lovely character, possibly due to it's position. I like it.

The Air Norton really does have a thick sound, no wonder it’s such a popular neck pickup. I love the D Sonic, but perhaps expected it to be slightly more aggressive than it appears to be. There is a deep response from it, and it doesn’t seem overly harsh. I love the fact that individual notes ring clear even with heavy simulated distortion from my Line 6 software. That is something my previous pickups have never managed.

I can't take credit for the pick guard manufacture, blackmore, that was done my local tech. If you have a tech who is local to you, and is known to be handy, they could easily use the existing Sub 1 pick guard as a template. That said, if you are happy with the control and pickup layout of the Silo Special, then you could purchase one from EBMM and have the body routed for the third pickup (mmmm, Moonstone  ).

Irn Bru has easily played it’s part in this project, catdaddy, keeps a boy on track in the early hours!

I’m a fair bit away from sound clips, and even further from video, but I do plan to get something together.

The weather has been awful today, and tomorrow looks to be the same. As soon as I have a dry day I’ll capture that Abalone in natural light, it really is fantastic.

Thanks for following the thread folks, keep your eyes peeled for more pics and updates!

If you want a more aggressive sound out of the D Sonic, try it placed with the screws towards the neck. From the DiMarzio site: "Installation direction makes a noticeable difference in the sound, particularly with overdriven amps. With the solid bar toward the bridge, the sound is a little brighter and better-defined, and this is the direction DiMarzio recommends for heavy strings and low tunings. With the adjustable polepieces toward the bridge, the sound is warmer and a touch louder and this works best for standard tuning and more solo-oriented playing. Each coil has a unique tonal character, so the 2 split sounds are different, and parallel humbucking produces a third, clean and bright sound."

That said, with my Morse I love the sound of the bridge bucker & bridge single together. It adds some real definition to the sound. So I'm sure it sounds great on this guitar!

Again, nice work man. Looks excellent.
