I thinking of buying one until I can get my grubby hands on my dream Silo.
I've tried the Sub a couple of times, but seeing as I haven't really played seriously in over a decade, my testing skills kind of suck except for a few licks.
Now obviously this guitar does well with metal and some rockin' blues, but what else can I play nicely with it? How's the Cleans? Could I get a decent jazz tone? etc....?

I've got those sound clips coming bro, just for you (ignore the cheesy crap from my tunes, my tone was awful there)...last night I plugged in my SUB 1, and I played clean for HOURS, I had some nice delay and chorus going, then I dialed in the Uni-Vibe...WOW...but with the ME-50 I am also able to dial in some tone modifiers and the one I couldn't stop playing with was the Hollow Body tone...MMMMMMMM, SUWEET! Anyway like I said I played for like 2 hours and of course the clean tone was superb. I can honestly say I am really digging the middle postion on the Sub 1, (especially on the Pet. but that's another story), what an amazing tone...the secret is all in the pup position, something I am learning rather quickly. Wih action, one must also pay attention to pup heights..too close and the pups become fuzzy, unclear...of course too far and there's mud to deal with...

Soon my good friend, I can't wait for you to get one...

I think the SUB 1 clean tones are superb........really bright and full on the bridge....mellower on the neck but not muddy (great for a fat blues sound). I mostly play rolling stones, rush, hendrix, classic rock stuff....and think the SUB is very well suited for this. Can't comment on whether the SUB is well suited for jazz, since I don't play jazz, but for most rock n roll applications, I think its great. :)

Thanks guys!
I think the Sub is the way for me to go initially. Otherwise I'll be waiting longer to get a Silo. It's not like I even have a guitar here to hold me off!
So Sub1. Then upgrade my amp. Then get a Silo. That's the plan! ;)

This may not win me any accolades here but...
I picked up a Sub1 at a local Toronto shop and the setup/fretwork was most disappointing.
By mass production standards it was understandable/acceptable BUT by EBMM standards, I was surprised it left the shop.
Super high action and CLEAR file marks on all the frets from the 15th fret onward. In fact, the frets hardly seemed crowned (ie, trapezoidal cross section)
The salesman informed me that the axes go straight to the rack from the box.
This saddend me since I am a VERY vocal supporter of EBMM and the quality of their axes. :(
I am hoping this one was just a "stand out" because most other product is outstanding.

Good plan, fogman. I don't own a SUB1 but I've tried one extensively in a store and it was a great axe at a great price.

That's a load of crap...I own TWO SUB 1's and I've played at least 5 others and they were all equally set up wonderfully...in fact one day the SUB's ( all 5 in the store) were set up way better than the 7 string PET (the one I bought) and an Axis.

I can only comment on the set up of said SUB 1, just like the Pet and the Axis, someone got a hold of them and cranked up the action, big friggin deal...as for the frets...who knows, maybe someone took a file to them...I'm really suprised at this post. If you're the EBMM supporter that you say you are, then why didn't you go beyond the call of duty...tell the shop owner, tell him that there's something wrong with the SUB 1. That it doesn't represent the quality that EBMM is known for and perhaps something happened. Posting and expressing your dissapointment is something I would expect from a NONE EBMM SUPPORTER.

Well I'm tired of it all, just cause it isn't an Axis doesn't mean it isn't an EBMM. You tell me, I have an 1800.00 EBMM JP7, a 3000.00 Wayne Custom 7 yet I still find time to play, enjoy and get thoroughly of on BOTH my SUB's which are listed at what 700.00 US ...in fact I traded in 2 Silos yet kept the SUBs...that says a heck of a lot in my books. I've had Strat owners, and Les Pauly lovers sit and play my Subs and they instantly fell in love...

I totally agree with you Bud!
It's still part of the family.
Just because it's more economical (not cheaper!) doesn't mean it's not deserving.
The price is sometimes irrelevant. My first guitar, a black Series A that I bought for $129 like 14 years ago was great. I wish I still had it. It stayed in tune great and had a really nice strat-tele sound to it.
Picking on the Sub I guess in some ways is like picking on the youngest of the family. I suppose a little torture is to be expected!

Raz, no need to get hysterical. I'm simply stating my observations. And, I DID in fact, bring this to the shop's attention AND asked if there had been an "aftermarket" setup.
I was told it was "straight out of the box"
Don't get me wrong, I am a big EBMM supporter but nobody's perfect (myself included) I was surprised by the workmanship and simply reported it objectively to the shop and here. That's all.
EBMM products are by far and away superior-I know that and you know that. This Sub1 simply stood out.

Maybe the shop attendant lied. Maybe it was used.
I've seen a lot of b.s. coming out of some of their mouths.
Some of them should sell used cars!!

Thanks for the passion. I could believe that the action as maybe a little high. If the dealer got the guitar in winter and it is humid summer then it is a simple truss rod tweak. THis happens all the time even in the same season...shipping issues climate in the store, etc.

Raz the set up is better on the premium line. We spend about 15 minutes on a sub and 45 on a regular series. The big difference is that we buff the frets on the regular ones and dont buff the sub. It is prety much a cosmetic deal though.

All of the subs that leave our building are subject to the same quality control standards and are inspected before leaving the building. FOr a guitar to get out of the factory with fret file marks randomly and the other stuff jazzbo mentioned is possible but not probable. The customer is always right....but

Once, I was at a local GC and was playing a SUB and had a mom and son come up to me to ask me questions. They were looking to get junior a guitar and amp. His first one......my oh my....I remember that day myself.

Anywho, they were asking this and that and then it got down to.....which guitar. F**der?!!? Gibby?!?!? BC Rich?!?!? Well, I said, those guitars are okay, but for a starter pack item, junior will quit within 2 months and you lose. So, I gave the SUB to the kid and showed him a few chords...easy ones to let him try out the axe. He loved it. Mom thought it was a tad more expensive than she was willing to go.....but, with some coaching my yours truly, she got the guitar and a Roland Micro Cube for the kid. I was just about as happy for him as if it were bought for me....LOL.....

Anyway....months go by, I see the same kid in the music store again. He is still playing and loves the SUB. Great axe!
