Is it my imagination or does the SUB preamp not sound as good as the Stingray or Sterling preamp? Is it the same preamp? I can't imagine they used a whole different pre in those, but it does sound different. I did a search for related topics and found nothin'.

It has been heavily emphasised when I've seen them for sale that they use the same electronics.

Different woods could be the thing.

The active SUB5 has a Sting Ray 2EQ fitted and not a 3EQ. That may be the difference you're hearing. On the other hand the SUB5 may be passive (no battery) which will again be different.

The three band sounds way different on my stingray from the way my active sub 5 sounds. The stingray has cut and boost. The sub, only boost. I wish I could change out the subs preamp for a stingray preamp. I would play it alot more then.

Yeah, I bet the passive one sounds great. The difference is that the SUB is only boost + it's only a 2 band, so I'm spoiled by the tone of my Sterlings. I'm considering putting in a Aguilar 2 band preamp, which I just happen to have in my parts bin.
